Volkswagen (VW) is set to begin the production of its vehicles in Pakistan in 2022. VW is the largest automaker in the world, having manufactured and sold the most cars in the world, with Toyota coming in at a close second.
VW Group has some of the most prolific auto-manufacturers as its subsidiaries, including Bentley, Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Bugatti, SEAT, and Skoda.

The automaker will initially produce the Amarok Pickup Truck and the Transporter Van in Pakistan. The Amarok will compete with the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max, whereas the Transporter Van will go up against the likes of Kia Grand Carnival and Hyundai Grand Starex.

The automaker has acquired the greenfield status under the Automotive Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21 and will begin producing the vehicles under that policy. The assembly plant will have the capacity of churning out 28,000 vehicles on a yearly basis, however, the report states that the setting up of the plant has been delayed by 8 months due to COVID-19.

Volkswagen is reportedly coming to Pakistan in partnership with Premier Motors, a subsidiary of Premier Systems, which has been selling Audi passenger vehicles in Pakistan for over a decade. Reports state that Premier Motors sell between 700 and 800 vehicles every year.

There is no word as to when and if the automaker will compete in the passenger car segment of Pakistan. It should be noted, however, that the prices of Volkswagen’s cars are regarded to be more on the expensive side, even in the established automotive markets.

What happened to government's environmental policy?

Not very good marketing when your next step is Volkswagen.

And who'll buy them?

Or will they be produced to export to richer countries and Pakistan will be used for its cheap labor & tax evasive laws?

You're answering my question with a question...

I'll be the better man and dismay your concerns "No". So now please answer my question(s)...

There is a Market demand for it in Pakistan as well. Some would be sold here, while other exported. Don't just assume 220 million Pakistani are poor. We Pakistani are very good when it comes to hiding wealth.

Being practical with money does not translate into forking out millions of dollars on a commodity.

Don't worry you are not the targeted customer anyway
This is in direct conflict with governments eco friendly policies and austerity measures it has vowed to go through with in her mandate.

Even used car like vitz 2006 model is above 10 lacs. If 5,000 cars are sold per year it would be great achievement.

Congratulations, Pakistanis. You can use the experience you gain to start up your own high quality car brand one day :)

have been hearing about volkswagen operations in Pakistan for the last few years with nothing concrete

Volkswagen has been very successful in producing cars in Brazilian, Chinese and Indian Markets, which are not unlike the Pakistani market in profile. VW has been making cars for close to a hundred years now, last 50 of them in Brazil. Brazilian VW team designed a new small SUV ( VW Nivus 2021) which looks to be a hit judging from sales in Brazil and Southern Europe.

They make some excellent well-engineered (and safe) smaller economy cars as well, such as Polo etc.

There were cheaper models in the 2000's specifically developed for Brazil. The same for India too.

VW models equivalent to Toyota and Honda shown below.

Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic = VW Jetta

Toyota Yaris and Honda City = VW Polo

The new VW 7 seater model popular in the US is called the Atlas, which comes loaded with electronics. It is considered a poor person's BMW X5, but probably more reliable than the X5 itself. :p:
