Russian President tells Arab League his country will fight to establish an independent Palestine with a capital in East Jerusalem

Vladimir Putin has said Russia will fight for an independent Palestinian state, and called for the issues of the Middle East to be resolved through peaceful means.

Despite international criticism over Russia’s own role in the Ukrainian crisis, Mr Putin was hailed last week by a St Petersburg Cossack group for his ability to “bring order and stop wars”.

In an address to the Arab League summit in Egypt on Saturday, Mr Putin spoke against foreign intervention in countries’ internal disputes and spoke of the role Russia can play in diplomatic channels.

While Russia openly opposes the stance of US-backed Israel on the Gaza crisis, its position in the Middle East is complicated. Mr Putin is one of Iran’s key allies, but as he spoke on Saturday the core nations of the Arab League engaged in air strikes on the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

His attempts to urge a peaceful solution in Yemen haven’t had much of an immediate impact – on Sunday, the Arab League agreed to the creation of a joint military forces comprised of around 40,000 elite troops to resolve the future “challenges” of the Middle East.

As one of the “Quartet” entities involved in Middle East peace negotiations, Russia has played a key role in talks about the fallout of last year’s Gaza crisis.

He told the summit this weekend: “Palestinians have the right to establish an independent and habitable state with a capital in East Jerusalem.

“Russia will continue to contribute to achieving this goal through bilateral and multilateral channels,” he said.

Okay, Putin, chill out. No need to rush into things. When did Putin decide to become the Savior of the Muslims? Let's figure out Syria first, before trying to solve everything.

new. cold war........ don't know how us and west react after Russia approach these days

Israel ain't pushover , even for big bear. And if it comes to that then Israel will take many capitals in the region down before falling.

Russia is trying to put muslim world in his pocket whereas Russia very well know that if it will come openly then it won't be difficult for Chechens to blow it up once they have free hand on latest technologies. I welcome Russia move but it is just hot air and a bluff.

Putin doesn't care about Muslims , he is just trying to make Russia a big player again "restoring the Soviet days"

So is this some kind of a deal between Russia and Saudi Arabia ? one supports Palestine other supports Russia in Syria ?

Where did Muslims come in...? It's Palestinian topic, not all Palestinians are Muslim. And then the Muslims them selves have differing opinions on them selves, like in Syria, some Muslims don't consider pro-Assad Shia's to be Muslims. And some Muslims in Iran don't consider 'wahabi' Muslims to be Muslims. So let's leave Muslims out of this please.

From march, made during a trip to Egypt, old news. As to Putins intention to atually do any thing to help Palestine or is he just saying the right thing for the audience?

OK that is another propaganda piece by The Independent. Putin only said that Palestinians deserved a state and that Russia will contribute towards the goal. He did not say Russia will 'fight' as far as I can tell. This is the stand of most countries of the world.

There is no need to attribute motives to Putin for just reiterating Russia's stand.

@Star Wars : Saudi Arabia is probably the last Arab country which will bother about a Palestinian state. For 6 decades they kept watching when their ally USA shamelessly backed each Israeli attack on Palestinian territories.

it'll never happen. even if Palestine becomes an official state, as long as Israel exist their will be no peace.

Russia could give Israelis land in Russia equal or greater in size of Israel right now, but they wouldn't take that offer.

if the status quo remains Palestinians/Muslims in general will be the majority in Israel in the next 50 years. so I don't see the point in rushing.
