Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s export turnover in January 2018 reached 19 billion USD, a decrease of 3.3 percent against December 2017 but up 33.1 percent compared with the same period last year.

Export revenue of the domestic economic sector rose 31.6 percent while that of the foreign direct investment (FDI) sector expanded by 33.7 percent.

Items posting year-on-year increases in export value included phones and spare parts; garments-textile; electronic products, computers and spare parts; footwear; machines; equipment and tools; wood and timber products; vehicles and spare parts; coffee; and fruit and vegetables.

However, export revenue of rubber and pepper dropped by 5.7 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively during the month.

China was Vietnam’s largest export market with a turnover of 4.5 billion USD, a 2.5-fold rise from the corresponding time last year, followed by the US, the EU, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan and the Republic of Korea.

Meanwhile, the country imported 19.3 billion USD worth of goods in January, down 3 percent against December 2017 but up 47.4 percent year-on-year. The import value of the domestic economic sector increased by 43.2 percent and the FDI sector jumped 50.4 percent.

Among the import items, phones and spare parts; electronic products, computers and spare parts; machines, equipment and tools; and oil and gas saw higher import values.

On the contrary, import revenue of autos, milk and dairy products fell 17.9 percent and 6.2 percent, respectively.

China remained the largest import market of Vietnam with turnover of 5.7 billion USD, up 45.6 percent year-on-year. It was followed by the Republic of Korea, ASEAN, Japan, the EU and the US.

The numbers reflect a trade deficit of 300 million USD in January. The General Statistics Office explained that businesses are importing more goods to serve production and consumption during the upcoming Tet holiday.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the country’s exports are set to face a range of difficulties in 2018 such as global economic uncertainties, impacts of sudden changes in economic and trade policies of major economies like the US and the EU, impacts of geo-political tensions on the global financial sector and increasing supply resources.-VNA

January is usually a weak month. I think we will reach $300 billion in exports this year, ovetaking Thailand @Yingluck . interesting: China surpasses America to become Vietnam´s largest export market @TaiShang

. .
Tet is Chinese new year.. which falls in January OR February, that's when people close shop and spend holidays. so the YoY economic data of either Jan or Feb may fluctuate greatly, and thus becomes meaningless.

but as a German you probably don’t know that.

man Tet is wellknown, never forgotten, for the people in Vietnam or in Germany. usually Tet is a time when economic activities are weak. a strong consumption is usual, hence rising import in the month is usual, but a strong export is unsual.

You always need us more than America.
tiger, America having more in trades than China is a situation that can last for long. VN is midst of industrialization, you are welcome to buy more from Vietnam, for example petrochemical products. the Koreans currently build a giant complex producing hundreds of thousands of tons of ethylene and propylene a year. that is just one of the many giant petrochemical plants coming soon online. ok we need you for industrialization, but I think you need Vietnam too, for different reasons.

America is becoming stingy now, and don't expect they can create more jobs for your country than China.

Frankly speaking, I do not think we need Vietnam. Considered the many similarities and blood connections of both countries, it is great the common people could live peacefully. But, for two countries, I love to see this relation of "no friend and a little hostile", it is great for us. I wish we would never be closer forever.
VN do not have anything we urgently need, and gave us nothing but betray. We actually do not need your country.

One reason for this is because Vietnam is more ever integrated into China supply chain.

But they need our water :P, we generously give them free water to serve 1/3 of Vietnamese population in the north that include Hanoi, without our water Vietnam will collapse.

Your water need to flow out. You wont be able to build a infinitely large reservoir to store infinite flow of river current.

. .
We can divert it to Nord for our northern brothers :D

The terrain makes the engineering work prohibitive. In the SN water transfer central line for example, Danjiangkou reservoir is around 200m above sea level, while Song Hong at Lao Cai is around 80m above sea level.

The high elevation at Danjiangkou allows flow of water without any gravity pump.

This is one challenge. Of course you guys can build a dam and raise the elevation. But there are a lot more challenges.

I wont want to go into details.

I know it's very challenging but regardless the cost, our northern brothers and sisters have water shortage, why give it to the unfriendly Vietnam when China need the most?
