The Left-wing extremists, widely known for following guerrilla warfare technique, is now learnt to be raising specialised unit of ultras to attack choppers used by the Central forces engaged in anti-Naxal operations.
The shocking disclosure came to light after Chhattisgarh Police have recovered a video clip purportedly showing the ultras training a unit of 15-20 cadre to shoot down helicopters using Light Machine Guns. The clip, said to be of recent origin, was recorded at a training camp somewhere in Naxal-infested Sukma forest. Sources said Naxalites had been setting up special units since 2008 and several documents giving details of guerrilla warfare with graphic images were recovered by the forces. They said the paramilitary forces had in 2011 seized Vietnamese Army training manual from a Naxal hideout, which had even surprised senior tacticianS of the Naxal combat operationS.However, for the first time the forces recovered a video footage of actual training being conducted by the Naxals to target choppers. But, senior officers involved in anti-Naxal operations termed the whole training video as “childish”. Officers said the Maoists used some kind of dummy choppers made of woods, swinging it from tree to hit the bottom of the flying machine but the actual landing is very different.
They pointed out several recent incidents where Maoists tried to attack a chopper during emergency evacuation. “It is alarming, but not surprising. We have recovered several written training manuals from Naxal training camps in the past which had given us an idea about their training,” officers added. One such document ‘Aiming helicopter- Tactics in facing helicopters’ reveals that Naxals have been training their cadre to damage choppers using AK 47, SLR and LMG. Naxals’ manual pointed out that special forces of America and Britain use light support weapons and general purpose machine guns to mount such attacks.
