The Left-wing extremists, widely known for following guerrilla warfare technique, is now learnt to be raising specialised unit of ultras to attack choppers used by the Central forces engaged in anti-Naxal operations.

The shocking disclosure came to light after Chhattisgarh Police have recovered a video clip purportedly showing the ultras training a unit of 15-20 cadre to shoot down helicopters using Light Machine Guns. The clip, said to be of recent origin, was recorded at a training camp somewhere in Naxal-infested Sukma forest. Sources said Naxalites had been setting up special units since 2008 and several documents giving details of guerrilla warfare with graphic images were recovered by the forces. They said the paramilitary forces had in 2011 seized Vietnamese Army training manual from a Naxal hideout, which had even surprised senior tacticianS of the Naxal combat operationS.However, for the first time the forces recovered a video footage of actual training being conducted by the Naxals to target choppers. But, senior officers involved in anti-Naxal operations termed the whole training video as “childish”. Officers said the Maoists used some kind of dummy choppers made of woods, swinging it from tree to hit the bottom of the flying machine but the actual landing is very different.

They pointed out several recent incidents where Maoists tried to attack a chopper during emergency evacuation. “It is alarming, but not surprising. We have recovered several written training manuals from Naxal training camps in the past which had given us an idea about their training,” officers added. One such document ‘Aiming helicopter- Tactics in facing helicopters’ reveals that Naxals have been training their cadre to damage choppers using AK 47, SLR and LMG. Naxals’ manual pointed out that special forces of America and Britain use light support weapons and general purpose machine guns to mount such attacks.

i doubt these terrorists could shoot down or even damage a helicopter with LMGs

now if they had some of these they might stand a chance

a rounds fired from AK, INSAS, SLR is enough to shoot down a helicopter hovering at a low altitude, even if those rounds from small arms couldn't shoot down choppers, it can surely penetrate through the helicopter and case damage to both men and equipment inside it. those pics of AA guns you posted are used to shoot down fighter jets...

you would have to be at least 200 meters IMO to actually do any real damage.

not saying light arms isn't a danger to helicopters, but i don't see them being really effective in the field.

Simple Arm all helicopters with FN-MAG door machine gun, with gunner equipped with thermal vision, it will work PA choppers are armed in this way to tip of TTP dogs during hovering.

Though they may seem like terrorists, the organization started off for very different and noble reasons. However, the Maoist connection has definitely erased that goodwill they had initially earned. The ppl who usually fill the ranks of this group are men, women, children, uneducated and educated.

It was due to gov't apathy, corruption and the harsh treatment meted out to innocent civilians that forced these ppl to create, establish and train in such groups.

.
Hmm...

Time to get our own version of the US Patriot Act.

We need to get the Army into this. Seriously. Before it is too late.

Maoists have a steady supply of arms from foreign countries and that means we are really running out of time.

They want power at any cost, even if it means killing our fellow countrymen.

Unless we see tanks rolling down their shantytowns and smashing them en masse, we have a mountain of a war to fight.

.
for how long??? in and out would be the motto.

time of hovering is low, but if the Maoist are prepared for the attack on choppers then it will be deadly and that few minis will be enough for terrorists to shoot the helicopter. it is not the 1st time a helicopter came under fire.... in dense jungles enemy can hide closer to the target point.

LMG is definitely capable of taking out a mid-to-low-flying helicopters.

No, small are a credible threat to helos.. especially the unarmoured ones.

.
The only effective method of using a LMG to bring down a heli that I know of is to hit it from above. This tactic has been used to some degree of success in Afghanistan. Find the helis LZ...get a overlooking spot and setup a few LMGs, duskhas and some RPGs. Let the heli come as close to landing as possible and then let him have it.

This one was brought down with a DShK I think.

I still doubt this mate, specially the LMG part which is very much rare for naxals ,most of them equipped with .303 and Bore guns.
