USA is selling ANTI-MISSILE SYSTEM to INDIA ???

yeah USA wants to supply ABM system to India to Protect it from Nuclear Missiles fired against it. Please dont tell ABM systems are not potent, they are, otherwise Russia wouldnt make such noise when It was placed in PolanD!

News reports are coming but I don't think this deal will fructify. Because India will ask for ToT for radar system and all which US will not give. Talks will go on that's it :)

Hopefully it wont go ahead if India asks for ToT, I am opposed to ToT to un-allied countries like India (that I for one don't trust) and hope for that reason that India goes for the Mig in the MRCA deal. As it least it wont be our or our allies technology being compromised.

From my view India is a useful counter balance to China and could be useful with any future problems with Pakistan as well as being useful on a few other issues but still should not be trusted with our technology.

Surely just because someone holds different views to you doesn't mean that they should be banned.

If by "ally" you mean countries that toe the US line like Mr Blair did back in the dodgy WMD dossier days, then India would prefer being "un-allied", thank you.

If you view the glass as half-empty, you can cite India's coziness with the erstwhile USSR, its failed market-socialist mixed model, trade barriers, etc.

But if you view the glass as half-full, you can look at India's reforms since the early 90s, opening up of its markets to western companies, replacing the lovey-dovey relationship with Russia with a more balanced approach that treats Western viewpoints and interests with due respect (e.g. India's vote against Iran) and the willingness to take risks to further the relationship with the US (e.g. faceoff threats from the Communist party in the Indian coalition govt and go ahead with the nuclear deal).

True, we can do better in many ways, but India is most certainly on the right track and thankfully, the US govt realizes that, terming India as a "natural ally".

IMHO India should go ahead with the missile shield if offered, even without ToT. In addition to obvious protection from potential threats from Pakistan and more importantly, China, I bet it offers long-term savings in running costs of maintaining air-defence forces on two fronts. There may be some analysts who have done the NPV analysis on this aspect and I would be interested in looking at the numbers...

I meant ally as in NATO members and countries like Australia. India's closeness with Russia and their joint cooperation on various projects are the main cause for my concern on the matter of ToT.

Well If the USA is not that concerned I guess the British should leave it at that. We already have access to the best of western tech, i.e thru Israel. Already developing stuff with them. As for the Russians, well they are all weather friends, though economics have come into the picture lately.

I'm pretty sure your concern is shared by quite a few within the US defence/foreign affairs establishment and the GoI is aware that the onus will be on India to assuage these concerns. Personally, I see signs that India is slowly beginning to reduce the dependency on Russia by exploring Western options for the next generation of Indian military hardware. The Su-30 and Gorskhov are the major Russian deals in the works, but these are counterbalanced by the P8I deal. The MRCA deal is still anybody's guess. the PAKFA is really still on paper and may indeed not go anywhere. I'm pretty sure India and US can work out some sort of arrangement which safeguards sensitive parts of the technology but gives India the flexibility to build on it.

Overall, the US is probably keen to seize the initiative from Russia and offer an unbeatable "package" that addresses India's defence needs in the foreseeable future. This US-India strategic relationship is a hot topic and I'm excited to see it all coming together.

US-India in talks over missile defence
Updated at: 2040 PST, Thursday, January 08, 2009
LONDON: As part of their overall strategic partnership, the US and India are engaged in talks over sale of missile shield systems to help New Delhi face any nuclear threats from Pakistan and other "volatile" countries in the region, a media report said on Thursday.

Quoting unnamed US diplomats, a foreign daily said the preliminary talks took place mainly at a scientific and technical level and American defence officials had conducted computer simulations with their Indian counterparts.

Noting that India is a partner of the US, the officials said "we want to provide it with whatever it needs to protect itself. This fits into the overall strategic partnership we are building."

The Indo-US relations blossomed in the recent years culminating in the signing of a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

The report said India's need for greater protection against threats emanating from Pakistan and other volatile countries in the region was highlighted by an escalation in the Indo-Pak tensions in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks.

It claimed that India also views China, with which it has a border dispute, as "a potential adversary."

Why oh why do I always ask myself are we fightning alongside with the Americans on their war of terror?
They cannot be trusted one single bit.
What use is there to sell these systems to India and help stabilize the South East Asian region?
It will just spark another big arms race between Pak-Ind.
I'm pretty sure if Pakistan was in talks with the U.S. about a similar agreement, we'd have Indian officials crying out loud about it.
I'm interested in the response of Pakistan to these talks.

Yep, one of the reasons that Israel cannot be trusted with technology. What they get China and anyone else who is willing to pay gets. Although I disagree that they have the best tech.
