India could convert its Polar Space Launch Vehicle into an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile within a year or two of a decision to do so, says a National Intelligence Estimate, representing a consensus of all US intelligence agencies, including the CIA, projecting trends through 2015.

Most components needed for an ICBM are available from India's indigenous space program, it says, adding New Delhi believes that a nuclear-capable missile delivery option is necessary to deter its rogue neighbors first use of nuclear weapons and thereby preserve the option to wage limited conventional war.

"Nuclear weapons also serve as a hedge against a confrontation with China," the NIE says.

The NIE expects Agni to be the mainstay of India's nuclear-armed missile force.

India continues to push towards self-sufficiency, specially regarding its missile program. "Nevertheless, New Delhi still relies on foreign assistance," it says.

Nothing New !! Dr.Kalam Has stated this Long Ago !!

The earliest SLVs was converted ballistic missiles. India should do the reverse.

.
First Pakistan has to create SAM's that can reach 30,000 feet!!!!!!

Then ICBM can be created through China.....

Read in Mid-day, Bangalore edition.

Please provide the link. On topic India may have technology but right now we don't need ICBM. Our relations with America n west r improving, ICBM test will hurt our relation with them.

May be Not a Missile Over range of 10k Km But a Ballistic Missile That can Cover Up Whole China is very Much Needed

We Already have Agni V Which will be Tested Soon !! and The Said Development Of Agni 6 SLBM And Land Version Over Range of 6k Km Should Be Enough for Deterrence against Any Chinese Threat !

wth do you mean by that ?

we need our arihants diving off the coast of maldives to be able to launch a counter attack on enemy soil if need arises !! For that we need larger range...

the entire line of argument based on missile's range should be from deccan to harbin is irrational to start with...

Right now we don't have any threat or serious issue with any European country or America, our major security threat is only Pakistan n China and we r doing well to counter them.

When need arises India could convert its Polar Space Launch Vehicle into an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile within a year or two

For a country that has launched PSLV more than 30 yrs ago , ICBM if it intended to have is a cakewalk ..... the only reason India have not had an ICBM is because it never needed one ... there are no hostile enemies for India in the west or far east .... There is no rationale in having an ICBM to show off some power and irk friendly countries .

ICBMs are very much available with India, if not the technology.

Saraswat already said that with small technical adjustments, we cant convert exisiting missiles into long range.

However, India at this time doesn't need an ICBM. There is no other country in the world which wants to destroy India, except our rouge neighbors.

Agni 4 already has covered 80% of China, Agni5 will seal Beijing with our missiles.

We just need to show that, mind your business and don't come in our way and we wont on yours.

Our neighbors should think a thousand times before having a wrong eye on India.

And moreover, India should give away its "No first use" policy.

Say, if a more powerful nation attacks us, we don't stand a chance. Henceforth, as soon as the evil eye turns on us, we nuke that eye, we may be dead but we will make them bleed and blind for centuries to come.

Dude, Agni III is more than enough for Beijing and Shanghai.

The emphasis on Agni V is launch from Deccan to cover the North-Eastern most city in China.

.
India has already said that, the defence doctrine will be reviewed from time to time.

Should a need arise or should any other country turn a black eye on us, den DRDO has the answer

.
We should stock few qty of ICBM's, we really don't know when the need would aeice and it is better to be safe than sorry.
