The US military is closely watching the security situation in Afghanistan after fresh gains by the Taliban against government forces as the Pentagon withdraws, top officials said Wednesday

Speaking in Congress, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley said 81 of 419 district centers had come under the control of the insurgents.

While the Taliban say they have added dozens of districts in the past two months alone, Milley said 60 of those had been captured last year before the United States began its final pullout.

He noted that the Taliban fighters had not captured a single provincial capital.

In the same hearing Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made clear that the Taliban´s gains were not interfering with the final withdrawal of US troops after nearly two decades.

The pullout is already more than half-done and is to be completed by September.

"We are focused, and the task that we have at hand is to conduct our retrograde in a safe, orderly and responsible fashion," Austin told the panel.

"We´ve developed a very detailed plan to do that. And we have accomplished the task according to plan thus far, and really provided for the safety of not only our forces but our allies as well," he said.

Once you take the losers as your partners what else to see?!?!?!

The same story the most of the time: the South Koreans couldn’t fight, the South Vietnamese could’t fight, the NA thugs couldn’t fight etc....

The glaring success came only when they took the Paks and the Hakiki Afghans as the partners! But, it was like too much for them for the DESTINY wants them to fail.....

The USA could easily turn the current Taliban advance. Strategically though.....the USA doesn't want to waste the resources anymore. Afghanistan is being written off.

Yes, they know well the futility of it. They've tried it so many times that now they know it's an inevitability. You can simply delay it but not avert it all together with a reasonable plan of action/resource expenditure.

being enemy of america fatal but being its friend is death of you but in this twist pak was fatal for usa.

it is called strategic thinking... Pak was always going to be the neighbour. US was just a visitor.

The USA can easily control Afghan territory, the Taliban are no match for USA firepower. Problem is the USA didn't really understand Afghanistan or the region. Its local allies in Afghanistan were a nasty combination of corrupt and inept....making nation building impossible.

go there, fk up the place, then leave lol
It was already messed up. USA should have kept its objectives limited. Wipe out AQ/OBL declare victory and go home. Problem was the Cheney/Neocon camp needed to keep mission going as long as possible so they could justify taking Iraq's oil (pretty sad since the USA would have a shale revolution a few years later). Then the idiot Obama camp came and expanded the "good war" instead of cutting the USA's losses, thinking that India, Kabul could keep the Taliban and Pakistan under control. Its just miscalculation after miscalculation.
