Washington(CNN)The US Navy once again challenged Chinese claims in the South China Sea Thursday, sailing the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Mustin near the Paracel Islands.

The US Navy has twice sailed warships in a similar effort to challenge Chinese claims to the Paracel and Spratly islands in the last month and carrying out another such operation near the Paracels in March.

The increased operational tempo comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing on a range of issues including the Chinese Communist Party's efforts to exert greater control over Hong Kong and responsibility for the coronavirus.

"On May 28 (local time), USS Mustin (DDG 89) asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Paracel Islands, consistent with international law," Lt. Anthony Junco, a spokesperson for the US Navy's 7th Fleet, said in a statement.

"By conducting this operation, the United States demonstrated that these waters are beyond what China can lawfully claim as its territorial sea," the statement added.

The Pentagon recently revealed that a Chinese vessel on April 14 conducted "unsafe and unprofessional maneuvers" near the Mustin "which was conducting normal operations in international waters" at the time of the incident, according to Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Dave Eastburn.

The Paracel Islands are claimed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan, and the US has long said Beijing has militarized the islands in the South China Sea via the deployment of military hardware and construction of military facilities.

The US military has recently accused China of seeking to exploit the coronavirus pandemic to gain military and economic advantages in the region.

Personally i do not understand why some Vietnamese mongrel keep cheer leading US Navy. Does he expect the US is going to war with China any time soon? The US does not have the courage to push forward a military conflict with North Korea and Iran is already telling.
They are fake Vietnamese. South Vietnam leftover living their life in Germany or US. Do they really care about the real Vietnam?

Same as many Pakistanis cheering for US are in fact, American Pakistanis. I am wondering will they ask to go to war for US against Pakistan. Refusal to do so will have their citizenship revoke.

Pakistanis always will have a soft spot for the West. They are the people of the Book and we must be courteous towards them. Its a history that goes back to the British, many Muslims wanted Churchill to be the viceroy for British Raj.

You do understand Churchill was a Anglo supremacist and a huge racist who caused the Bengal Famine in 1943

And was responsible for supporting the incursion into Turkish Anatolia by supporting expansionist Greeks in 1919

I think Pakistan is more comfortable with the West. Chinese people and Chinese culture are too alien.

We are Good Muslims who keep good relationships with our neighbors and those who we hold a partnership with. China is always going to be a neighbor and we love them for the sake of God and yes, we will fight alongside with them because Islam permits us to fight with the people we have treaties with.

China has been a reliable ally and Pakistan would never backstab China. Hopefully Pakistan is the mediator between China and the West.

I understand. However it’s best in Pakistan’s interest to stay out the conflict between US and China.
