US wants to join Saarc

SAARC has done nothing so far for the betterment of the region mainly due to the reason that it had been made hostage to Indo-Pak tension.

Now in the new scenario it has been revived not for the betterment of the region but again to be used in the big game.
Cant you ppl see the entry of Afghanistan and desire of China, Japan and now US to become its members.

Afghanistan can be understood as they want to be Indias piggy and China bcoz pakistan want it.

Very true Jana, SAARC has not been able to progress to the level of E.U or ASEAN only because of indian attempts to impose its hegemony over the other countries, the hindus are still clingling on to their DREAM of maha bharat much like the indians you see clinging on to the backs of buses and trains . They see the entire region as "Bharat" ruled by saffron robe wearing hindu priests. They try to coin terms like "South Asia" or the "indian subcontinent" to deceive the world . They even dream of owning the entire indian ocean to make it into an indian lake. !!!

If hindustan or Bharat could be excluded from SAARC...i can assure you that this organization will progress economically and socially.

Can u tell me what others plan to sell and buy and what size the market is. The main attrcation of SAARC is that smaller countires get access to a bigger market like Indias for their goods and servies.

Imho, SAARC countries can very well manage themselves without uncle interfering in their business.
Since China, backed by Pakistan and Bhutan has shown interest to become an obsever uncle wnats to do the same.
But its not their arena!

China runs a surplus of $200Bn with US,imagine what will happen to your local companies if u try to have a SAFTA with them.

It won't work without India due Indian geo-political situation and huge market.
India is surrouded by Saarc countries.

As for China, we already have been given observer status to the Shanghai group and will get full membership in near future.

Somehow people in this forum have this misconception that US is a "has been" economic power and China is most powerful economically in the world.

Any economist will tell you that though US is in debts, they have an GDP of $14.2 Trillion which is equal to all the initial SAARC countries and china combined. They have a capacity to throw down these shackles and bounce back.

So with US joining SAARC will gain a very big market and gain a lot economically. Frankly speaking SAARC is not that strong politically due to lot of internal conflicts and hence we really don't need to worry about US gaining any more political power than it already has. Although most benefits would be derived by China and India in that order I think other SAARC countries will also gain a lot.
