US want "more jointness" in military operations with India

We'll be only fooling ourselves, u know this better than anyone else. US wants India to sign another agreement apart from CISMOA & LSA called BASIC EXCHANGE AND COOPERATION AGREEMENT (BECA), which facilitates the exchange of geospatial information for the use of the Governments of both Parties For defense and other government purposes. Now these 4 agreements (including EUMA) are not some kind of charity done by the US such that they give access to there bases etc. to other countries, these are designed solely to serve the national interests of US. We would be generously giving the keys of our sovereignty to the US by signing them.

Very true, but I am not in favour of signing all such deals- that would be handing India over on a silver platter to the Yanks. Instead India should pick and chose the deals it is willing to sign and IMHO the LSA could prove useful to India in the future. I feel there is an appetitie in the US to allow India to only sign a few deals and not others, they seem to be slowly realising India isn't going to become another poodle and will protect its own independance. I remember earlier this year when the US defence secratery went to India and he publically said that the signing of the deals wasn't paramount to Indo-US defence ties and that the ball was in India's court but that he wouldn't be pushing too hard for them. This is a pretty big step away from the postion of the US in the past.

Like I said, in the future India maybe able to take advantage of the numerous bases the US has all over the world. If India ever needs maintence, medical or logisitcal assitence far from Indian shores it can go to a US base and recive such assittance. In the future when India will be a globabl power India can take advatage of such bases and support.

Well, that we can get on our own & maybe it will be more effective.

If India have to be a global power, it has to rise gradually. I remember how just some years back our leaders used to say that India's area of concern remains Arabian Sea & BOB, this changed over no. of years to spread from Gulf to straits of Malacca. Now in some quarters u will hear that it has spread from Mediterranean to SCS.

Currently, We are interested only in IOR than our presence will be slowly felt in SCS/Pacific & beyond.

As far as IOR is concerned, India/IN is playing the Game very well - IN has listening post in Madagaskar, ANC, berthing rights in Oman, regular visits to Seychelles, Mozambique, Mauritius, Maldives is in IN's security cover, etc. With more economical/military clout we can be the force to reckon with in IOR.

For SCS/Pacific, IN already has berthing rights in Vietnam & with more friction b/w China & it's neighbors, many south east Asian countries will be more than happy to provide access to there bases.

For all this we don't have to become a junior partner of US.
