U.S. puts back 'no support of Taiwan independence' statement on fact sheet

06/03/2022 12:34 PM

Washington, June 2 (CNA) The United States Department of State has put back a statement that it does not support Taiwan independence in the latest update of a fact sheet on U.S.-Taiwan relations, the removal of which on May 5 triggered a strong protest from Beijing.

The latest version of the fact sheet, published on May 28, states that "we do not support Taiwan independence," a phrase which had been included in the fact sheet since at least 2018 before it was removed from the previous version on May 5.

"We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence; and we expect cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means," the fact sheet read.

However, the statement that "the U.S. recognized the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legal government of China and acknowledged the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China," which was also removed on May 5, was not added back to the latest update.

The changes made on the May 5 version were strongly denounced by Beijing.

Asked by CNA if the latest update was a response to China's protest, a spokesperson of the State Department, who asked not to be named, said "absolutely not."

"We have always been clear with the PRC about our one China policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), the three (U.S.-China) Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances," the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, a statement that the U.S. "maintains our capacity to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, or the social or economic system, of Taiwan" consistent with the TRA was added to the updated fact sheet.

The fact sheet was updated to reflect U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's speech on May 26 speech about the U.S. approach toward China, the spokesperson said.

"As the Secretary said, we enjoy a strong unofficial relationship with Taiwan, a vibrant democracy and leading economy in the region," he said.

The U.S. and Taiwan share similar values, deep commercial and economic links, and strong people-to-people ties, which form the bedrock of our friendship and serve as the impetus for the U.S. expanding its engagement with Taiwan, he said.

"We will continue to support Taiwan's meaningful participation in the international community, and deepen our economic ties, consistent with our one China policy," he said.

lol, dont even dare to say in words yet some still want to believe usa will send soldiers.

US is just playing games and trying to stir up troubles and cause annoyances for China, we should just ignore it.

Fact sheets are like the official price list in a bazaar shop: they are mostly part of the ornamental decor.

I am sure the Chinese government trusts its on-the-ground intelligence more than any fact sheet.

So the official stance of US hasn't changed, Taiwan is not an independent country, after US clearly set their tones, its lapdogs will soon follow.

After initial vociferous bluffing, US found out that it stands no chance for a war with China over Taiwan strait, so it's coming back to the fold.

TAIPEI: The US State Department has updated its fact sheet on Taiwan again, to reinstate a line about not supporting formal independence for the Chinese-claimed, democratically governed island.

Last month, the State Department changed its website on Taiwan, removing wording both on not supporting Taiwan's independence and on acknowledging Beijing's position that Taiwan is part of China, which angered Beijing.

Washington said the update did not reflect a change in policy. That wording has now been changed again, to reinstate a line saying "we do not support Taiwan independence."

The change was first reported by Taiwan's official Central News Agency on Friday (Jun 3) and appears to have happened on May 28, the date at the top of the fact sheet.

A State Department spokesperson said on Friday that the fact sheet was again updated to reflect Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent speech on China, in which he said the United States does not support Taiwan's independence.

"We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan's independence, and we expect cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means," the spokesperson said, referring to the strait separating the island from the Asian mainland.

Other US officials have echoed that position in recent weeks, saying the long-standing policy has not changed.

Taiwan is already a de facto independent country, though with only very limited international recognition. Washington has no formal ties with Taipei but is its most important international backer and arms supplier.

Taiwan's official name remains the Republic of China, the name of the government that fled to the island in 1949 after losing a civil war with the Communist Party, which set up the People's Republic of China with its capital in Beijing.

China's government in 2005 passed a law giving Beijing the legal basis for military action if it judges Taiwan to have seceded or to be about to.

Taiwan's government says only the island's 23 million people have the right to decide their future, and while it wants peace, will defend itself if attacked.

The US Department of State has put back a statement that it does not support “Taiwan independence” in the latest update of a fact sheet on US-Taiwan relations.

The latest version of the fact sheet, published on Saturday last week, states “we do not support Taiwan independence,” a phrase that had been included in the fact sheet since at least 2018 before it was removed on May 5, triggering a strong protest from Beijing.

“We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side; we do not support Taiwan independence; and we expect cross-Strait differences to be resolved by peaceful means,” the fact sheet reads.

However, the statement that “the US recognized the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legal government of China and acknowledged the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China,” which was also removed on May 5, was not added back.

Asked if the latest update was a response to China’s protest, a department spokesperson who asked not to be named said “absolutely not.”

“We have always been clear with the PRC about our ‘one China’ policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act [TRA], the three [US-China] Joint Communiques and the ‘six assurances,’” the spokesperson said.

A statement that the US “maintains our capacity to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, or the social or economic system, of Taiwan” consistent with the TRA, was added to the updated fact sheet.

It was updated to reflect US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s speech on Thursday last week about the US’ approach toward China, the spokesperson said.
“We will continue to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the international community, and deepen our economic ties, consistent with our ‘one China’ policy,” he said.

In Taipei, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said that the US has explained the changes, while declining to comment further.

Taiwan will continue to uphold its democratic constitutional system and the inviolability of its sovereignty, the ministry said, adding that its future would be determined by the will of the Taiwanese people.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) said that the most important change made to the fact sheet was the removal on May 5 of the phrase “Taiwan is part of China.”

Previous versions of the document stated that the US acknowledged “the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China.”
The rewording of the document suggests that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would not be seen as the continuation of a civil war, but would be regarded as a full-blown international incident, Wang said.

DPP Legislator Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) said that the many changes over such a short time show that Washington takes the Taiwan issue very seriously.
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) caucus convener William Tseng (曾銘宗) urged security and diplomatic agencies to make a careful assessment of whether the US’ Taiwan policy has changed.

It is not known whether China exerted pressure, but the government must make assessments on US policy and how it would affect the Republic of China, Tseng added.

.
US is just playing games and trying to stir up troubles and cause annoyances for China, we should just ignore it.
We should anticipate the worst and prepare for the best.

No matter what the US govt says, we should count the US power into the Taiwan issue and be prepared for it.

We should continue to accelerate the expansion of the Navy and nuclear weapons until our nuclear weapons reach the level of the USA and Russia. Until the number of our warships reaches the total strength of NATO Navy.
