US Troops to Move from Syria to Kurdistan in Pullout Plan
02/01/2019
ERBIL — The United States will move its troops from Syria to Kurdistan Region’s Erbil from where they will later leave in a withdrawal plan, a high-ranking Iraqi military official said.
“The US forces who will withdraw from Syria, will initially head to Kurdistan Region’s capital city, Erbil. They will later return to their home country or elsewhere,” said Yahya Rasool, a spokesperson for Iraqi army's Joint Operations Command.
He emphasized that the troops are not violating the Iraqi federal rule as they are only using Erbil as a transition point to withdraw from Syria, as reported by Kurdistan 24.
“Iraq does not need these forces,” Rasool pointed out.
He explained that other forces withdrawing from Syria to al-Asad military base in the western province of Anbar, will not stay either.
“There are enough advisors, and there is no need for increasing the number,” the spokesperson added.
