The US should adopt a policy of “total isolation” against Pakistan to send a signal that it faces the prospect of becoming a “second North Korea” if it continues destabilising Afghanistan by supporting the Taliban and Haqqani network, a former top American diplomat has said.

“In the aftermath of the US drone attack killing Taliban leader Mullah Mansour, this is the time to increase the pressure by suspending all assistance to Pakistan — military and civilian — and move towards isolating Pakistan internationally, including not supporting IMF renewal of financial support,” Zalmay Khalilzad, a former top American diplomat in the Bush Administration, told PTI.

Mr Khalilzad, who played a key role in America’s policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq after 9/11 terror attack, said the US should adopt a policy of “total isolation” against Pakistan.

Such a policy, he argued would send a signal to Pakistan that it faces the prospect of becoming a “second North Korea” unless it changes its course on Afghanistan.

Mr Khalilzad was the highest ranking Muslim American in the history of the United States. He was the US ambassador to the United Nations under President George W Bush. He also served as the US ambassador to Afgha-nistan and headed the country’s diplomatic mission in Iraq.

“If Pakistan truly changes course, then the US should be willing to be supportive in a significant way. But we have to substantially escalate the cost of Pakistan’s hostile policy in Afghanistan,” he said. Mr Khalilzad also called for retaining the current level of forces in Afghanistan and more flexible rules of engagement for US forces until the next President reviews the situation in Afghanistan and decides on a new policy.

“While there are some potential risks in isolating Pakistan, there are real risks with continuing the current course in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said and called for having a contingency plan to deal with the nuclear scenario risks.

“In fact (US forces) being in Afghanistan would help in addressing such challenges promptly,” he said.

A top US Congressman has also opposed the decision of the House of Representatives to increase American aid to Pakistan from $700 million to $900 million alleging that Pakistan continues to support terror groups that target US troops in Afghanistan.

“Pakistan cannot be trusted. It has played us now for a total of $33 billion of our money since 2001,” Republican Congressman Ted Poe, chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Non-Proliferation and Trade of the house foreign affairs committee wrote on Tuesday in an op-ed in US News.

.
It's simply throwing the blame of US' defeat in Afghanistan on Pakistan.
Or should we say that Pakistan has successfully sunk another invader in Afghanistan after the USSR.
The US needs someone for face saving in the wake of it's embarassing escape from Afg.
So why not put Pakistan infront as the evil guy and drag our
a$$es out of this hell hole.

.
LOL at lame Indian media trying to make a nobody like Khalilzad sound significant  let alone the fact that he is an Afghan. Anti Pakistan rhetoric form Anti Pakistan elements means NOTHING.

KhalilZad's have provided great services to his Northern Alliance cousins ..almost all of them are now multi-millionaires through American funding and selling of American weapons meant to fight Taliban and Al Qaeda. apart from the unfortunate banning of Gen Dostom... all other Northern Alliance leadership continues to enjoy American support which is thanks to people like KhalilZad.

I think his next suggestion will be to also isolate all Afghan pahstons and cut them off from any relief they should expect from Afghan regime (LOL yea right). or foreign agencies.

. .
Actually he is on his own cause: making money.
Northern Alliance and people like him have sucked Americans dry and successfully kept their attention on Pakistan

I mean getting caught smuggling bags of Money, secretly hosting TTP leaders, selling off almost entire American weapons and equipment many times.. (which ends up in peshawar Bara Market)..
hats off to these Racist but smart Uzbeks and Penjsheris.. they have pretty much screwed every other ethnicity (mostly Pashtons) of Afghanistan .. increased drug trade and smuggling and extortion of their own people and

YES

successfully blamed Pakistan.

US never came to Afghanistan as Invaders like Russians did, one of the objective was to take revenge from Al Quaida and other was to bring that war torn country to a normal situation so it couldn't be used as a breeding ground of Terrorists for any country dreaming some sort of "Strategic Depth". US attained its goal and has no intention to take back Afghanistan in his pocket. However, Pakistan has become one of the biggest looser during US presence in the region. You lost your peaceful western border, your paid stooges got kicked out and lost your so called strategic depth.

Good to see Afghanistan being a sovereign nation, not being blackmailed by its eastern neighbor every when and then unsuccessfully trying to dictate their foreign policy.

To add, Pakistan has successfully sunk its chances to become a progressive nation dooming its economy.( And dont give that cpec bullcrap which will turn you into a 30 trilion economy within 5 years).

We don't need to look very far. Just look at today's attack in his country. Afghanistan is a failed narcotic state with no future in sight. Even with the support of the world including the Americans.

maybe your right but american senators and congressmen dont look at it like that for them lobying is perfectlly leagel but what about your cause as why a pakistani ambassdor to USA went against his own motherland/country even if you reject an northen allince afghan and what he is doing ?

.
Well,
Good Luck with making Pakistan the next North Korea,
Doesn't seem to be working now.
on the contrary Pakistan's relations are improving with many other countries,
that ex envoy needs to realize it aint just USA that runs the show throughout the world.

Its a multi polar world.

This is end result: https://defence.pk/threads/kabul-suicide-bombing-40-cops-dead-and-50-injured.437218/

What did the US gain? They couldn't defeat the TTP in Afghanistan after more than a decade. So much for safety and sovereignty in Afghanistan. Today, apart from certain areas in Kabul Taliban rule the roost. Human rights is virtually non existent and Afghan warlords are fighting for the spoils. If this is what you call a success...

Don't worry too much about Pakistan. We're the most resilient country on the planet. We will survive with or without anyone's support. You should know this by now after ten years of failed destabilizing efforts from across the border.

See who started it!
I don't think it was him WHO brought INDIA into it, OK?
(should i also add that smiley or you get the message without it? )
why qoute a known flame baiter who is so wrong in his argument.
if KhalilZad might explode with rage for terming him as Pakistani origin.
alas these guys dont even verify before trolling.

even their vice president Gen Dostom is banned from coming to USA. he is ethnic cousin of this clown Khalilzad.. both have suckered Americans very nicely. almost 90% of all equipment provided by Americans is lost, stolen or sold by their minions.
these guys are such scums that they even sell these items to the Afghan taliban.

Hats off to their genius. blame Pakistan and ensure that you will continue to milk America

.
Not gonna happen. US fears that the total isolation of Pakistan will make it more unstable and then we will have another North Korea type rogue state or worse a failed govt will create a massive unrest within the country which will help the terrorist groups to gain more ground with the risk of its nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of Taliban or worst the Daesh.
