US recognises India as a global power: Obama to PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has had his first meeting with the US President Barack Obama at G20 summit in London.

President Obama told Prime Minister Singh that the US "recognises India as a global power".

"We recognise India as a global power, our relationship is very important," he said, adding, "The US sees India as a critical partner in the 21st century."

Conveying India's keenness to carry forward the Indo-US strategic relationship that has developed over the last five years, Singh told Obama that India and the US shared "same dreams and same vision" and the two countries would like to work together to realise those dreams.

During their talks on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit, Obama hailed India's "high stature" because it had "unleashed economic forces" and said a lot of it had to do with the wisdom of Dr Singh.

He said the US sees India as a global partner and together the two countries can play a critical part in meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Singh while conveying the greetings of President Pratibha Patil and people of India told Obama that "you are much loved and respected in India."

Singh referred to strategic relationship that had developed between the two countries during the last five years and India wanted to carry this forward.

"Under your leadership we will face challenges such as climate change," the prime minister told Obama at their meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 summit here.

Singh said together India and the US can strive for a new path in meeting the challenges of economy, climate change and terrorism.

The US president said India is full of diversity and energy and that it was a complex country like the US.

Much of the growth and rise of India are attributed to the wisdom of Manmohan Singh, Obama said.

(Long live PM Manmohan Singh)

... A just comment for an apt economist who took this country to the path of development and envisaged an era of equivocal and predominant economic growth which in parlance was able to sustain the Great Economic Depression of the 21st century.

Have you checked his CV, its speak volumes of his being a genius as President Obama says "He is a marvel to the world."

Seems like Obama was really impressed by Dr. Manmohan Singh. And so are we. This guy is a genious. A true leader that wins people by actions and not by his words. We need people like him to lead the country.

The next person I would like to see lead India would be Shashi Tharoor. And I'm glad he has made is political mark.

With people like Dr. Singh who needs to worry about Advani?

Obama walks up to Manmohan, have first their chat

LONDON - US President Barack Obama walked up to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the reception hosted by British Premier Gordon Brown and officials said the two leaders talks animatedly for close to ten minutes.

This was their meeting since since Obama assumed office Jan 20.

A member of the Indian delegation said: ‘President Obama walked up to the prime minister and spoke to him for almost 10 minutes.’

The interaction Wednesday set the stage for the bilateral meeting between the two leaders and their delegations later Thursday.

Diplomatic sources said several world leaders were particularly keen to listen to the Indian prime minister, the Oxford-educated economist who had fashioned the country’s economic reforms in the early 1990s as finance minister.

‘Over the last five years, our PM has emerged as a highly respected leader at international gatherings,’ a diplomat said, maintaining that Manmohan Singh’s views were considered seriously by all the G20 leaders.

At the reception hosted by Brown, the prime minister said the rise of protectionist sentiment in the industrialised world was an issue of vital concern to developing countries.

Sashi Tharoor is contesting from my constituency, Thiruvananthapuram. He wont become the PM. But we are sure that he will be the next FM if congress comes to power. Guess he has all the chance to win from Thiruvananthapuram. Anyway my vote if for him...

Why are you not talking about our dear Home minister P. Chidambaram. The only problem with this guy is he is a hard-liner. And a commie is some sense. But beware, this guy can also turn tables and heads and also has the ability to handle any situation without any kind of hassle. But will he be the next FM? Let us see.

P.S. He has already been a good FM in this government.
