bdnews24.com

The United States has not changed its position on Bangladesh and wants all political parties to dialogue for holding fresh elections -- but it now wants to leave it to the parties to decide.

After the Jan 5 elections, that the BNP boycotted, the US in a statement called for fresh elections as soon as possible with agreement on a poll-time dispensation.

The state department’s deputy spokesperson Marie Harf replying a question at the regular press briefing in Washington on Monday said “our position hasn’t changed”.

She referred to assistant secretary Nisha Desai Biswal’s recent comment describing Bangladesh as an important partner of the United States and that “we are encouraging dialogue between the parties”.

“….this is the path forward here, and nothing about that has changed”.

So will such a dialogue seen as leading to a fresh election anytime soon?

“I don’t have anything to say but would think all parties should come to the dialogue. Obviously it’s up to all the parties to decide together”, Marie Harf said.

NADA.

A lot of things, GSP, investments, assistance from WB. Besides, western powers are now showing more interests in Myanmar, this will significantly hurt our diplomatic interests especially on the Rohingya issue.

It's good that government is dedicatedly improving ties with China and Japan, but moving away from the West won't get us any where which is exactly what Hasina is doing.
