ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Reform Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday stated that, US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor is high on the radar of bilateral relations between Pakistan and USA and is the most important initiative taken in decades-long strategic relations between the two countries.

During a meeting with USAID Mission Director John Groarke, who called on him at Ministry of Planning, Development & Reform, Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the initiatives being taken to bring improvement in social sector particularly in education and health. He pointed out that country faces shortage in quality human resource to meet growing needs of expanding universities network in the country.

Country needs ten thousands Ph.ds scholars in next ten years to meet the faculty needs of universities and US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor will help Pakistan to produce these Ph.ds in future’, he stated.

The Minister recalled that unfortunately, Pakistan missed the opportunities in the past to benefit from the real strength of USA i.e. its universities to revolutionize its education sector. However, present government realizes the importance of benefiting from USA universities.

He emphasized the need to create the awareness for proper grooming of Pakistani students for Ph.ds programmes in USA universities and urged USAID to help Pakistan through capacity building measures in this regard.

In response to offer of USAID Director to contribute in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Minister welcomed the offer and said that there are tremendous opportunities of cooperation and collaboration in it.

He, however asked USAID representative to come up with tangible proposal. Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the need to harness the potential of Pakistani Diaspora by offering them tax incentives for social uplift projects in Pakistan. He shared his plan of laying telemedicine infrastructure in DHQs to connect with top Pakistani doctors in USA to raise the level of treatment in Pakistan.

‘I believe it offer opportunity to Pakistani doctors in USA as well as with Pakistan IT engineers in USA to help Pakistan become IT centre of the region’, he stated.

USAID Director commended the plan of US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor and said it would be instrumental to further strength the bilateral ties by expanding them into social sector. He also apprised the minister about USAID contribution to bring improvement in education sector of the country particularly in backward areas of the country.

Despite day in and day out petwari on PDF saying about highways and overhead being the measure of a country's development and improvement, when it comes to the begging bowl they use the same old: social sector particularly in education and health.

However, the aid given to Pakistan vanishes by paying for schools that are never made or teachers that dont exist!

I read a short paper on how USAID and many such organizations have a bad habit of giving money out and not managing or keeping track of where it is going....Instead they ask for annual reports which most of the time is made up with names and places which dont exist with teachers that are not ...and all the money goes to these nice accounts!

Great initiative but every one will find US co-operation to be dismal...they are only interested in funding war and chaos..

What is Pakistan expecting from the US on the education front? Wouldn't money be better spent upgrading Pakistan universities and mint Ph.Ds there?

You should tell this to poor indian students who lost time and money on a scam in their desperation to reach US.
Why waste money rather this money can be funneled in a pool to improve indian universities..

Just a whole lot of talk and promises as usual. Very important is to note how USAID and the US embassy is dealing with the Pakistani state on a country to country basis. It tells us how uninterested the Americans are towards a bilateral relation with Pakistan. It is basically a mockery.

Pakistan and the US don't share any mutual regional and wider interests. In fact, China's involvement with Pakistan irks the US tremendously. If anything, in the past years, the relationship between both has worsened and deteriorated. It would be foolhardy to think that Pakistan and the US can build some sort of knowledge corridor or anything else for that matter. The only thing that we have been building is a whole a lot of mistrust. Frankly, mistrust is something we will also be building in the future. Simply because our paths and interests collide with one another. This is a frank and realistic observation.

It is better for both Pakistan and the US to adjust the level of cooperation to a bearable and expectable level. Pakistan's future lies with other allies. Our relations with the Americans will remain neutral and distant for obvious reasons.
