UNBconnect... - US Navy team meets Bangladesh Navy chief

DHAKA, Sept 16 (BSS) - An eight member visiting Navy team of the United States (US), led by Vice Admiral Scott H Swift, Commander of the US 7th Fleet, paid a courtesy call on Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Z U Ahmed at Naval Headquarters here today.

Vice Admiral H Swift spent sometime with Navy Chief and
exchanged views on the issues related to bilateral interest, said
a press release.

During call on, they discussed about the forthcoming joint
exercise of Bangladesh and US Navy titled CARAT-2012 (Cooperation
Afloat Readiness and Training) scheduled to be held in Chittagong
from 17 to 24 September.

They also discussed on various exercises jointly conducted
by Bangladesh and US Navy for the development of naval personnel
in terms of training.

The US Navy delegation arrived here yesterday on a four-day
visit to Bangladesh and they will leave Dhaka on 18 September
(Tuesday).

US 7th Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Escott H Swift on Sunday assured that they have no intension to set up any permanent or temporary base in the Bay of Bengal.

“We are more interested to assist Bangladesh army and navy to enhance their ability to protect its maritime resources from pirates, protect country form terrorist attack and co-operate during natural disasters,” he said.

The US admiral told this at a roundtable discussion at in the capital’s Hotel Radisson in afternoon.

Admiral Swift, who arrived in Dhaka on Saturday, will attend the second “Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training” (CARAT) exercise between the US navy and Bangladesh navy that will begin on Monday with an opening ceremony at Naval Base Issa Khan in Chittagong.

US Ambassador Dan Mozena also spoke on the roundtable discussion.
