U.S., S. Korea, Japan set for joint drill

WASHINGTON (Jiji Press)--The United States, South Korea and Japan will conduct a first-of-its-kind joint naval exercise on June 21-22 in waters south of the Korean Peninsula, the U.S. Defense Department said.

This is the first time Maritime Self-Defense Force troops will participate in a drill with U.S. and South Korean naval forces, though MSDF personnel have participated in joint U.S.-South Korea maneuvers as observers.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, based at the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, will take part in the joint exercise.

"The exercise will focus on improving interoperability and communications" with the South Korean Navy and the MSDF to "facilitate cooperative disaster relief and maritime security activities in the future," the Pentagon said Wednesday, adding the three countries "will conduct this exercise beyond the territorial waters of any coastal nation."

But the joint operation is also intended to pressure North Korea to refrain from escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, sources said.

The MSDF sent several field officers to a U.S.-South Korea drill conducted in July 2010 in response to North Korea's alleged torpedo attack that sunk a South Korean warship, while South Korea played an observer role in a Japan-U.S. exercise in December the same year. The three countries have also held a joint search-and-rescue drill.

But Seoul has been reluctant to invite Japanese troops to military exercises with the United States.

To make it easier for South Korea to give the nod to the MDSF's participation, the Pentagon highlighted disaster relief cooperation as the key purpose of the forthcoming trilateral exercise, which comes after Tokyo and Washington set common strategic goals in June last year calling in part for reinforcing security and defense cooperation among the three countries, informed sources said.

China opposes Japan-ROK-US military drill

BEIJING - China on Thursday indicated its objection to a joint military drill to be held by Japan, the Republic of Korea and the United States near the Korean Peninsula.
"China holds that the international community, especially Asia-Pacific countries, should take moves conducive to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, not to the contrary," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said at a regular press briefing.
The Naval forces of the three countries will stage a joint drill next Thursday in waters off ROK's southern island of Jeju, which will involve training in search and rescue operations and maritime interdiction operations.

No, China drills alone serving its own objectives.
PLA and NK done the joint excise in your SK territory 60 years ago, You forget it?! Or yes, You are not a eligible rival, under USA has trained you for more than 60 years, Don't let us disappoint!

1. War isn't exercise.
2. North Korean troops were pulled out of combat after December 1950. The PLA took over the main combat role sacrificing the lives of 500K troops.

under USA has trained you for more than 60 years
And Koreans have learned enough to be able to command US troops now.

Don't let us disappoint!
You won't be disappointed.

This has just as much to do with Diaoyu Island dispute as it has to do with North Korea. Time for PLA to occupy Jeju and put a halt to South Korea's expansion.

OK, Japanese and Americans are the leading actor of this drill drama, but Koreans as a clown

According to the reports, the US wants to hand over the wartime command of US forces to the Korean four-star general.

I know you want the US to hand over the wartime command of its troops to a clown, but US knows better.

for the first time since WWII, Japan now can officially enter Korean sea and land, sounds music to ear.
