Defense Secretary James Mattis warns allies that US cannot carry 'disproportionate' share

BRUSSELS

The U.S. could “moderate” its commitment to NATO if other members did not meet spending commitments, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said Wednesday.

Addressing fellow NATO defense ministers in Brussels, Mattis linked the U.S.’s relationship to NATO, of which it has been the leading figure since 1949, to members’ commitment to spend at least 2 percent of their national budgets on defense.

“No longer can the American taxpayer carry a disproportionate share of the defense of western values,” he said.

“Americans cannot care more for your children’s security than you do. Disregard for military readiness demonstrates a lack of respect for ourselves, for the alliance and for the freedoms we inherited, which are now clearly threatened.”

In his first speech to NATO allies since entering office, he added: “America will meet its responsibilities but if your nations do not want to see America moderate its commitment to this alliance, each of your capitals needs to show support for our common defense.”

President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about the relevance of the alliance, labeling it “obsolete” last month.

Following the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the “clear message” from Mattis but warned the alliance faced its gravest threat since the Cold War.

“Neither Europe nor North America can effectively deal with this on their own,” he said. “Our alliance is as much needed as ever. We are all safer when we stand together.”

Turning to defense spending, he added: “In 2014, we decided to stop the cuts in defense spending, gradually increase and move towards spending 2 percent of GDP on defense within a decade. Our progress so far has been good.”

Last year, 22 of 28 NATO members increased defense spending, he said. “Step by step, we are moving in the right direction. But there is still a very long way to go.”

Turkey joined NATO in 1952.

I must say that it is a fair demand. Although, to be a superpower you have to shoulder the burden that no one is willing to carry. No doubt, with Trump the US is about to have a more reserved role on the world stage. China is going
to reap the benefits and this is a positive development.

This Trump will weaken the NATO too because that's what Putin wants. If he survives 4 years, USA will be in a shabby shape.

That Europe pay its fair share of NATO's burden has been a long-standing request of US. The only difference here is that Trump is being more vocal about it. It's one of the few things of Trump's I wholeheartedly support. Not only does US spend more on defense per GDP of all NATO members, it foots the bill to defend most NATO members too. I mean saw this chart in today's Wall Street Journal:

I say do away with NATO and create a new organization that is more Euro-centric. Russia is not the Soviet Union, and a more muscular Europe should be able to hold its own against it.

US will still boulder much of the burden, but Europe is more than capable of spending more on its own defense, which will hopefully reduce the financial burden on US. It will also free resources for beefing up US presence in the Pacific, which is something both Trump and the US military is very keen on doing.

Trump won't abandon NATO because the US is using this organization to target Russia. Trump may want a good relation with Putin but the US political circle is pretty much against Russia. Observe the criticism thrown at Flynn for having contact with Russia and now he had to resign under pressure. All Trump could do is saying Flynn was treated badly. From now on it's gonna be America first sounds like music to plenty US citizens but so far we have seen Trump crawling back on his previous campaign promises. From abandoning NATO to still supporting it though he is now bitching about the financial contribution US is making in comparison to European members. This is not Japan where Abe has to make concessions for US protection.

So you believe that Japan will be compelled to go nuclear and move away from the US sphere of protection.

Somehow it will take time for the US polity to accept that they cannot endlessly remains gang capable of collectively passing judgements against other countries.

The era of global policing is soon going away.

Wherever it be.
