U.S. Indo-Pacific Command has sent Congress a new $76 billion, five-year plan to fund a vast range of missile defense systems, long-range precision weapons, and the building and upgrade of airfields across the Pacific.
The plan titled “Seize the Initiative” is an extension of the Pentagon’s desire to invest more money and resources in the Indo-Pacific region. The annual report is required by Congress, and this year’s version was delivered to Congress on Monday.
The details: An executive summary of the plan, obtained by POLITICO, calls for $9 billion in fiscal 2023, with another $66.9 billion spread out over the next four years.
Protecting Guam: The biggest slice of the request is $42.4 billion aimed at building a new air and missile defense system for Guam, along with new “electronic warfare, space, cyber, and over-the-horizon radar” systems spread throughout the region.
Those systems would form the backbone of an integrated sensing and tracking infrastructure across the Pacific that would feed into a network of precision long-range weapons launched from land, sea and air, allowing commanders near-real-time targeting information.
