Dunya News: Pakistan:-Military aid to Pakistan to be released soon: US

According to the sources, $800 million aid was due to Pakistan. Now the aid has been divided into two parts, $300 million in terms of logistic will be released immediately, while $500 million for training and weapons will be provided soon.

US reassures Pakistan of civilian aid

The United States reassured Pakistan that it will continue civilian assistance to the country after it deferred $800 million of military aid in a bid to seek greater defense cooperation, Express 24/7 reported on Friday.

The US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Thomas Nides delivered the message to Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in a telephone call.

Nides said that there is a slowdown on the security side; however, the US will continue to work productively on the civilian side.

The United States suspended military assistance to Pakistan two months after al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in a US-raid in Abbottabad.

Earlier this month, the US cancelled $800 million in aid and equipment to Pakistan which is more than one-third of the $2 billion it gives to Pakistan for security assistance as per the congressional bill approved by the two countries in 2009.

The cut-off came as a response to Pakistan’s expulsion of US military trainers as US officials claimed that the act made Washington ‘unhappy’.

Pakistan shut down a US program that had been training paramilitary forces, sending home more than 100 US trainers, and had threatened to close the base the CIA has been using for drone plane attacks on militant targets.

The relations between the two governments were strained after the uni-lateral US raid in Abbottabad. Meanwhile, the US has been urging Pakistan to improve its counter-terrorism strategy.

ISI chief's US visit went 'very well'

WASHINGTON: Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha departed Washington on Thursday after meeting Acting Director Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Michael Morell, Special Representative AfPak Mark Grossman and officials from the White House and the US state department.

A senior US government official has said that the meeting between DG ISI and his CIA counterpart went very well and both sides agreed on a number of steps that will improve Pakistan and the United States’ national security.

Another source familiar with the meetings said that they were held in a cordial environment. The source said that the subjects of the meetings included co-operation in intelligence matters, Pakistan’s concerns and respect for its limitations.

A senior official at the Pakistani embassy in Washington said the meetings helped stabilise the intelligence partnership between the two countries.

“Both sides were able to agree on the way forward in intelligence,” the Pakistani official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

“This visit has put the intelligence component back on track completely.”

Pasha made a brief visit to Washington, arriving on Wednesday and leaving on Thursday, to meet with Acting CIA Director Michael Morell and other intelligence officials. Both sides sought to renew ties of cooperation and move forward in an often challenging relationship.

I guess, it is what Pakistan is, we always accept bribes and cheat on us. But good news, more F-16 Blk 52 and other equipments. :D

Committee seeks report on presence of US military trainers in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs has sought a detailed report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the number of United States (US) military trainers in Pakistan, Express 24/7 reported on Friday.

The committee met in Islamabad with chairman Saleem Saifullah Khan heading the meeting and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir in attendance.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Saifullah said the committee had questioned why a large number of American military trainers had been issued Pakistani visas.

The committee has also asked the Foreign Ministry to name the person responsible for approving such a large number of visas.

Hina Rabbani noted that only $500 million of the $800 million US military aid was allotted for American military trainers in Pakistan. She expressed hope that the remaining $300 million dollars aid would be released by the US soon.

Earlier this month, the US cancelled $800 million in aid and equipment to Pakistan which is more than one-third of the $2 billion it gives to Pakistan for security assistance as per the congressional bill approved by the two countries in 2009.
