US eyeing Kashmir for military base

Kent,

First of all the post was directed only to Salim! Since it was a response of his post only!
Furthermore, It is difficult for India to geopolitically get involved with US against China.
Such a cooperation would not be seen with good eyes by china and also by Russia as it will give US a greater horizon in Asia then already available to US. Making scenarios of Cooperation is ok but what the post refers seems extremely BS in present geopolitical conditions and levels of Cooperation between all involved countries.

How come my post is BS as you put it?

What does it say?

What in your opinion is the geopolitical conditions prevailing?

We don't negotiate with Terrorists (East Turkistan Terrorist groups, CIA), Secessionists (Tibetan Government on-Exile, Republic of China / Taiwan), Anti-China movement activists (American minions, Indian nationalists, Japanese rightwingers, American imperialists, Free Tibet groups) and rubbish!

That is a huge list.

Anyone left?

But Indian officials have privately told the United States that, if requested, they will allow U.S. troops and equipment to be temporarily based on Indian soil for the first time in the country's history.

You are a journalist and I am sure you have used this "privately", "a source that spoke to us on the conditions of anonymity" etc when you want to actually say things that would make the copy good and sensational and yet claim that it the media's privilege not to name its sources !

These journalistic ploy can impress fellow journalists and the gullible alone!

It is not important at all!

It maybe important for Paksitan to give bases to fight the Moslems in
Afghanistan, but the same is not applicable to India!

Our sovereignty is more important that handouts. And it is possible since our economy is booming!

India Offers Three Air Bases for US Aircraft

Even though no military plans have been firmed up by Washington for retaliatory strikes against the so-called terrorist states, primarily Afghanistan, India has identified three air bases for a possible operational support to the United States.

According to the Times of India published here on Wednesday, the bases are situated at Avantipur in India-controlled Kashmir, Adampur in the northwest state of Punjab and Jamnagar in Gujarat bordering Pakistan.

The popular daily quoted a security official as saying that the offer had been conveyed to the U.S. after it was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security on Tuesday.

In addition, the paper said, India also promised to provide the U.S. with unspecified port facilities in its western seaboard for U.S. warships.

The committee approved the plan after consultations with the three service chiefs, who unanimously agreed on the need to support the U.S. military action.

"The chiefs felt that the Americans had joined our war against terrorism and we must naturally be the first to offer them help," said the security official.

The articulation of the government stand by External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh was motivated by a desire to ensure that Pakistan does not gain through an Indian default.

According to the official, Indian has already begun the " operational cooperation" by providing U.S. officials with intelligence they have on Afghan camps and the ruling Taliban.

However, He emphasized that Washington had not yet indicated whether it wants to use the offer of military facilities.

"We have detailed our specific offer which can then be factored into their planning," the official added.

As part of this exercise, U.S. ambassador Robert Blackwill met Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sushil Kumar on Tuesday to look for " harboring facilities along the west coast for its warship, in case they are in distress, while operating in the Arabian Sea area."

Their understanding is that the Indian ports could be used for unloading Diego Garcia and Guam-based marine prepositioning ships, the Times of India quoted military officials as saying.

Of course it has to come from the Peoples' Daily of China for sure.

I did a check on ToI Archives and came out blank.

As a Journalist I am sure you will be able to post the ToI story so that one could read the fine print and not the reflected version of China,

Jana,

It looks TOI news is twisted by writer. Also India can give some temporary supports to US if they are fighting with Taliban and AQ. But offering a military base against China and Pakistan is big no no in the time when India and china looking to major cooperation on various fronts.

An American colonel told MacDonald that

The US Navy wants a relatively neutral territory on the opposite side of the world that can provide ports and support for operations in the Middle East. India not only has a good infrastructure, the Indian Navy has proved that it can fix and fuel US ships. Over time, port visits must become a natural event. India is a viable player in supporting all naval missions, including escorting and responding to regional crises.

India has already provided port facilities for U.S. forces engaged in the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. Moreover, it has given the green signal for the United States to use Sri Lankan bases:

Despite years of trying to prevent any foreign state from getting near Diego Garcia and Eastern Sri Lanka’s base and port of Trincomalee, India has acted on behalf of the US Navy to secure its access to these ports and offered Washington access to its own ports for the GWOT (Global War on Terror). In return, Washington successfully pressured the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka to persevere in peace talks with the Sri Lankan government....[A]ccess to these bases in the Indian Ocean...is extremely valuable for operations and missions from the Middle East to Southeast Asia and could thus also serve as a check on Chinese naval ambitions in the Indian Ocean....Moreover, at the moment, US ships and planes now enjoy a case-by-case access to Indian bases.

The September 11 attacks in the United States, and India’s eager offer of its bases for the invasion of Afghanistan, marked a turning point. Before that point, a U.S. Navy ship visited India approximately every three years; now, according to U.S. Pacific Command officers, there are regular trips. Before September 11, the Indian government would not allow U.S. troops with weapons on the ground when responding to the Gujarat earthquake. “Today, after September 11, the US military has full access,” says MacDonald. The United States also wants facilities for training in India; according to MacDonald, “India has a variety of landscapes, from ice-clad mountains to deserts, and it would help the Americans because military training ranges are shrinking and becoming increasingly controversial in the United States.” And for the U.S. Navy, training with the Indian Navy is the best way to become “proficient in the Indian Ocean region.”

Jana, how can we interpret this thread that India can give a military base to US inside country? Please help us!
Even in the case of port access, India is cooperating only in case where GWOT is concern and not for US personal ambitions.

Providing a permanent military base to US in Kashmir is totally different issue that helping them on GWOT like refuelling etc.

India Offers Three Air Bases for US Aircraft

i think this is a old article and out of context. at the time of 911 india did offer its facilities to the US for OEF but the americans did not accept as better facilities (logistically and location) were available in Pakistan and Musharraf was more than willing.

as for a base in kashmir - very difficult to fathom!

Sir that is what we are saying that India did offer its bases and facilities to US after 9/11.

As far Kashmir i am of the view that US should look into this possibility of having a base there for future strategy.

Have you anything about Indian version of story about offering its bases to US? Because all you posted article are from external sources.

Yeh but these sources are not Pakistani!......:coffee:

I didn't put the condition as where does the sources are hailing from!

Since such news even circulated in Indian media regarding giving base to US Armada, then there had been huge Uproar from opposition political like congress for any such move or even talk of such intention.
