If you look at how congress and Pentagon approach Pakistan historically - you'll see that they have been holding contradictory views

For example congress would routinely say that we are playing a double game and holding back the US' efforts in Afghanistan etc.

Then you would have high profile individuals (such as Petraeus) saying that that is not the case at all.

If Army is the Deep State Then In congress most of the time they've supported working relationship with Pakistan & yes occasionally they do point out some negatives in the Relationship but still they never supported Cutting off Relations with Pakistan at all..

The Pentagon like Donald Trump's own political think tanks are divided on Afghanistan. Donald Trump himself is very clear. He wants out. There are hawks surrounding him who are essentially influenced or part of the deep state that seek a continuation of war in Afghanistan. Who is the deep state? Primarily the deep state is a state within a state which has its own agenda and is most of the time above the law and not answerable to anyone. By the way, this deep state also wants to remove Donald Trump. The veritable arm of the deep state is Pentagon, CIA and a few other powerful US government institutions who are usually on one page. The deep state profits from war. President Trump has changed the political landscape in the US. For the first time in US history we can assume that the deep state is today divided. There are elements within the deep state who are aligned to president Trump's vision. There are also elements within the deep state that don't accept president Trump's vision. Not just on Afghanistan, but a whole host of domestic and international issues. This division is visible in policymaking and on the mainstream media. There is a constant battle between both sides. There is also a wide rift among various segments of the society which are against Donald Trump and very often influenced or part of the deep state. Those who support president Trump are usually opposed to the deep state.

We are lucky that we have Donald Trump as the president of the US who wants an end to the war. Donald Trump is not taking dictation from the deep state. For the first time since the Afghan war begun we have finally a brave president in the White House who is not interested in prolonging the Afghan war. Sanity has prevailed. Not everyone agrees though and we saw this during Imran Khan's recent US visit.

Pakistan needs to grasp this opportunity with both hands. We need to fully accommodate Trump. Our goal is simple. Trump's success in Afghanistan is Pakistan's success. Our interests are aligned and this doesn't happen very often. Especially when the Democrats are in power and have a one-sided fetish for India. It is in Pakistan's best interest to have another Trump term in 2020. Success in Afghanistan for Trump should go a long way in winning the US elections.
