WASHINGTON: The United States has said that it continues to value its partnership with Pakistan and looks forward to rescheduling stalled talks as a former US ambassador warns that using “blunt pressure” on Islamabad could backfire.

“We continue to value our partnership with Pakistan and look forward to scheduling meetings at a mutually convenient time,” said a spokesperson for the US State Department when asked to comment on the postponement of bilateral talks.

Two US delegations were scheduled to visit Islamabad this week for talks on President Donald Trump’s Aug 21 speech, which outlined his new strategy for South Asia. He blamed Pakistan’s alleged support to some Taliban groups for Washington’s failure in subduing the Afghan insurgency and threatened punitive actions against Islamabad.

In the same speech, he urged India to play a greater role in Afghanistan, stoking Islamabad’s worst fears that New Delhi would use its growing influence on the western border for stirring troubles in Pakistan.

Since then, a number of former US diplomats and generals have warned the Trump administration that this strategy could end up antagonising Pakistan, without achieving the US objective of winning the war in Afghanistan.

US ‘continues to value partnership with Pakistan’

So does Pakistanis. So start again from where Trump humiliated Pakistanis, just by ignoring that point.

Guess what Pakistan is already antagonized and public opinion at the time is very against. No government is willing for a political suicide when elections are on the corner. US will understand the hard way that every action has consequences. They thought they could build pressure on Pakistan by asking India for a greater role, this only verified the dual face of US and Pakistan will not bend to this as evident by the number of former US diplomats and generals echoing the same.

Calling Trump's statement "hostile and threatening", the National Assembly has also urged the Government of Pakistan to 'consider' the following steps:

  • The postponement of diplomatic visits between Washington and Islamabad

  • Suspension of cooperation with the US, specifically the provision of ground and air lines of communication through Pakistan

  • Draw and inform the US of a blueprint for the dignified return of all Afghan refugees

  • Formulate economic policies to deal with any situation arising out of the absence of US assistance

  • Commence a diplomatic initiative, particularly in friendly countries in the region, to inform them of Pakistan's counter terrorism strategy and successes and the repercussions in the region of failed US policies while reiterating Pakistan's determination to strengthen control on borders with Afghanistan and demand cooperation and similar action from Afghanistan and ISAF
The National Assembly has also expressed concerns about increasing concentration of ISIS and other terrorist networks in Afghan provinces bordering Pakistan and demand that Afghanistan, US and its allies close borders for leaders of terrorist groups carrying out acts of terrorism against Pakistan.

Addressing, the US and Afghanistan, it says Pakistan seeks the elimination of all safe havens being provided to Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Jamaatul Ahrar and other terrorist organisations in Afghanistan from where terror attacks are carried out against Pakistan

The U.S. should not back down from condemning Pakistan harshly, because sooner or later the Pakistani generals will cave in. The Pakistani military establishment and ‘deep state’ cannot survive without U.S. backing. China can never replace the U.S. in this respect. The truth is that Pakistani State will collapse the day the U.S. decides to break off all support permanently. The generals have no integrity, they are just as corrupt as the feudalist politicians. The way to control Pakistan is the carrot and stick treatment, as Pakistanis fear the ‘danda’. There is no doubt Pakistani ISI is helping the Haqqani network in Afghanistan and refusing to rein in the Jama’at-ud-Da’wa (formerly known as Lashkar-i-Taiba) which recently formed a political party the ‘Milli Muslim League’. The Pakistani ‘deep state’ has absolutely no integrity.

US need to understand that we are sealing off our border with Afghanistan, but the border areas with AFG are tough terrain, and is difficult to close completely, insurgents there of will continue to cross over to recuperate and rearm.......By the same token, Afghan and US forces cannot prevent cross-border movement from the other side either.
Also more than 40% area of AFG is under Taliban control, hence they don't need safe heavens in Pakistan.
