WASHINGTON: The United States condemns the gun attack on the Russian ambassador to Turkey earlier on Monday, the US State Department said.

Ambassador Andrei Karlov died of his gunshot wounds after he was attacked at an art gallery in the Turkish capital Ankara on Monday, the Russian RIA news agency reported.

"We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source," said US State Department spokesman John Kirby in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

The Russian ambassador to Ankara, Andrei Karlov, has been killed by a gunman while visiting a photo gallery in the Turkish capital. According to agencies, he succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries at the scene.

Turkish media reports the shooter of the Russian Ambassador in Ankara indeed was a police officer.

Turkish state news agency says the gunman who attacked the Russian Ambassador has been neutralised.

A witness on Turkish TV said, “Gunman was speaking Turkish. Russian Ambassador’s body wasn’t moving”

This was a first event attended by the Russian ambassador following the rapprochement between Turkey and Russia. The gunman said, “We die in Aleppo, you die here.”

Turkish media added the gunfight ended in Ankara, where Russian Ambassador was attacked.

A witness suggested the Ankara attacker shot the Russian Ambassador four or five times. The ambassador had no security detail.

The attacker in Ankara showed a police ID to enter the perimeter.

Reports have suggested the gunman spoke in both Turkish and Russian – made threats about Aleppo and continued insecurity as revenge.

Who is benifited from this attack. Russia and turkey have good strong relationship... someone is not happy with Russian effort in region.

Good and strong? Theyre against each other in Syria, Turkey shot down their jet, Turkey is NATO member etc.

Russian took initiative to help turkeys military take over.. which president of Turkey ordagan thank Russia for helping them and apologies the fighter jet incidence. They have different openion over Syria Cuz turkey is directly suffering from this conflict. Russia is not doing anything to damage Turkey's assets.

No one is gaining a thing in Syria imagin this genocide happens in ur country who ever is killing no matter who, everyone who's living besides Syria is vonurable.

Now that Turkey and Russia are going for game changer energy deals which includes pipe lines etc., and mutual trade in local currencies along with other major deals, no wonder proxies are activated. Even nations at war don't kill ambasadors. All human achievements come to zilch when proxy wars are involved.

Initial investigations show that the killer police took his lessons at coaching centers run by FETO (Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Org). His tuition fees were paid by a FETO businessman who had been arrested 4 days before the incident. The killer's uncle had also been arrested due to FETO related crimes. Some well intentioned folks were questioning why FETO teachers needed to be deported from Pak working at the Turkish schools. Hopefully, they can now convince themselves..

Russia and Turkey will never allign in the same table due to their aspirations...Russia will never abandon Syria and Assad...So as long as Turkey is not alligned with interest of Russia, things will be murkier in Turkey....
