An analyst says the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) funds and protects extremist terrorist groups providing a safe haven for them to kill and terrorize the Shia Muslims in Pakistan.
In the background of this at least 48 people have been killed and 150 wounded in a blast that ripped through a Shia populated area of Karachi in Pakistan. The victims were leaving a mosque after evening prayer. Human Rights Watch has said over 400 Shia Muslims were killed throughout 2012 in Pakistan in what is claimed to be targeted killings. Pakistan has been among the leading recipients of US foreign aid both historically and in recent years.
Press TV has interviewed Ahsanullah Khan, Founder for Pakistani Advocates for Civil and Human Rights, New York about this issue. The following is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Looking at the situation in Pakistan the blasts that took place in Quetta earlier in February, we saw the arrest of Malik Ishaq the head of the Lashkar Jhangvi, which is a banned terrorist organization in Pakistan; however, it is interesting to know that this organization holds licenses to buy and operate heavy machinery.
This raises questions as to where the government’s priorities lie when they’re giving licenses to banned terrorist organizations. What do you make of that?
Khan: It’s very obvious and clear that all this has been happening for several decades and the government agencies predominately Pakistan’s army, intelligence agency. Since the... ISI then promoting supporting and harboring these terrorists organizations and they’ve been targeting several different minorities predominantly the Shia minority.
It’s been happening for several decades and it is very obvious that it can not take place without the shelter without the support and harboring of the Pakistan army who is there to protect them, who is providing them license; who is providing them not only license, but so many heavy weaponries and artilleries and all these weapons were there...
People are dying of hunger, they don’t have jobs, they don’t have a place to live; people are committing suicide because of hunger and it’s this little minority, which is being funded, supported and harbored by the Pakistan army is having the license to kill whoever they want and they are in a safe haven. They are living in Islamabad.
So far all these religious extremist groups including the Taliban and others; their leadership is never questioned, never challenged; their wasn’t any prosecution. So this is very obvious that all this is happening because of their support.
Press TV: What benefit does the Pakistani army get by supporting these terrorist organizations because right now we are seeing drone attacks taking place in north western Pakistan under the pretext of getting rid of these very elements from Pakistani soil.
So, considering how this is only allowing more instability both from outside and within the country, does the Pakistani army even benefit from this?
Khan: This what they want. From day one they are creating this kind of situation as the frontline ally of the US and for other allies of the US in the war on terror. And they want to keep this fake war on terror alive by harboring and supporting this kind of element to harass the rest of the world.
