US and South Korean special forces have been parachuting into North Korea to gather intelligence about underground military installations, a US officer has said.

Army Brigadier General Neil Tolley, commander of US special forces in South Korea, told a conference held in Florida last week that Pyongyang had built thousands of tunnels since the Korean war, The Diplomat reported.

"The entire tunnel infrastructure is hidden from our satellites," Gen Tolley said, according to The Diplomat, a current affairs magazine. "So we send (South Korean) soldiers and US soldiers to the North to do special reconnaissance."

"After 50 years, we still don't know much about the capability and full extent" of the underground facilities," he said, in comments reported by the National Defense Industrial Association's magazine on its website.

Gen Tolley said the commandos were sent in with minimal equipment to facilitate their movements and minimise the risk of detection by North Korean forces.

At least four of the tunnels built by Pyongyang go under the Demilitarised Zone separating North and South Korea, Gen Tolley said.

"We don't know how many we don't know about," he admitted.

Among the facilities identified are 20 air fields that are partially underground, and thousands of artillery positions.

In February, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that had built at least two new tunnels at a nuclear testing site, likely in preparation for a new test.

well.. its a pretty damn serious step to take.... if caught, could be considered as an act of war...

and no doubt n korean soldiers are out looking..

This is Not True US forces will quickly be recognized by local force and get killed and in next 10 mins Seoul will be on Fire...

Yes South Korean can fly in as they have lots of sympathizer.... but again its a very high risk game and I don't think South will take that risk now.

This is bs, the reporter twisted the general's words.

To say nothing of whether they do it or not, No general would be divulging ongoing Spec Ops to mouthy reporters.

US Denies Sending Commandos to Spy on North Korea

U.S. military officials are rejecting a report suggesting that U.S. military commandos have been parachuting into North Korea to gather intelligence on Pyongyang's underground military installations.

The Diplomat, a Tokyo-based political journal, on Monday carried a report alleging that a senior U.S. special operations commander revealed the supposed commando program at a conference in Florida last week.

But Colonel Jonathan Withington, a spokesperson for the United States Forces Korea, dismissed the story when contacted by VOA on Tuesday. He said the report took “great liberal license” with the comments made by Army Brig. Gen. Neil Tolley, saying some of the quotes were “made up and attributed to him.”

The Diplomat quoted Tolley as saying that both U.S. and South Korean commandos were taking part in the reconnaissance mission, which it said was aimed at uncovering information on “thousands of tunnels” built by Pyongyang since the Korean war.

Col. Withington said it is well-known that North Korea uses tunnels to hide its sensitive military operations. But he said “at no time” have U.S. or South Korean forces parachuted into North Korea to conduct special reconnaissance.

The author of the report in The Diplomat, David Axe, rejected suggestions he fabricated the quotes attributed to the general. He said if the general was speaking hypothetically, “he did not say so” and that “he spoke in the present tense” and “at length.”

US: No Commando Spies in North Korea

PENTAGON - The Pentagon is denying a media report that quotes a top U.S. commander as saying the U.S. is parachuting special forces into North Korea to do reconnaissance missions.

The report in The Diplomat - an Asia Pacific current affairs magazine - quoted U.S. army Brigadier General Neil Tolley as telling a conference in the U.S. state of Florida last week that the U.S. sends soldiers to the north for special reconnaissance of North Korea’s underground military facilities.

Pentagon spokesman George Little on Tuesday dismissed the report, saying it took the general’s words out of context.

"My understanding is that the general's comments were contorted, distorted, misreported, and that there is in no way any substance to the assertion. Again, it was misreported that there are U.S. boots on the ground in North Korea. That is simply incorrect," Little said.

General Tolley heads the Special Operations Command of U.S. Forces Korea. The report quoted him as saying the North Korean military infrastructure, which includes an extensive network of tunnels, is hidden from U.S. satellites and it is for that reason the U.S. sends South Korean and American soldiers to do reconnaissance missions.

U.S. military officials did not immediately provide a transcript of Tolley’s remarks.

The U.S. military does not deny it conducts intelligence gathering on North Korea in order to assess Pyongyang's intentions and capabilities. But U.S. officials on Tuesday said parachuting soldiers in would be in violation of an armistice that ceased hostilities with the North nearly sixty years ago.
