The US President Barack Obama has said the United States cannot eliminate Taliban or end violence in Afghanistan.

In his speech on Administration’s approach to counterterrorism, Obama said he ‘don’t want to paint too rosy a picture’, admitting that the situation in Afghanistan is still tough.

“War has been a part of life in Afghanistan for over 30 years, and the United States cannot eliminate the Taliban or end violence in that country,” Obama said.

However, he said “But what we can do is deny al Qaeda a safe haven, and what we can do is support Afghans who want a better future, which is why we have worked not only with their military, but we’ve backed a unity government in Kabul.”

The US President further added that United States helped Afghan girls go to school.

“We’ve supported investments in health care and electricity and education. You have made a difference in Afghanistan, and America is safer for it,” he added.

He also added that “early decision to strengthen our efforts in Afghanistan allowed us to build the capacity of Afghans to secure and defend their own country.”

“ So today, there are less than 10,000 American troops in Afghanistan. Instead of being in the lead against the Taliban, Americans are now supporting 320,000 Afghan security forces who are defending their communities and supporting our counterterrorism efforts,” he said.

According to a new survey, the Afghan public's confidence in public institutions and nongovernmental organizations is at an "historical low" (file photo).

  • annual surveyreleased on December 7 by the Asia Foundation, 29.3 percent of Afghans polled said they believe the country is moving in the right direction -- the lowest level since the U.S.-based organization started the surveys in 2004.

Authors of the survey say confidence in public institutions and nongovernmental organizations is at an "historical low," with Afghans saying they are most confident in their religious leaders (66.1 percent) and the media (64.5 percent).

"The findings this year illustrate Afghans' dissatisfaction with their government, job growth, and household finances," said Abdullah Ahmadzai, the Asia Foundation's representative in Afghanistan. "The nation's security, political, and economic transitions are still unfolding, and the survey suggests that more time is required for progress in these areas."

The foundation polled 12,658 Afghan men and women in interviews conducted between August and October in the country's 34 provinces.

. . .
Finally something sane coming out of Obama ...

An average person do not difference between Taliban, Al-Qaida and TTP ...

For those who don't know ,,, Taliban was the legitimate gov in Afghanistan at the time of US attack and has no relation (even not claimed by US) with 9/11 except for they refused to handover Osama (Head of Al-Qaida) without trial or proofs... Furthermore, Taliban regime was the most peaceful regime in last 4 to 5 decades ...

Al-Qaida was a millitant / jahadists organization operating from various countries including Afghanistan ...

TTP is millitant organization, which is financed by ransom money, smuggling and fundings through world organization to spread chaos in Pakistan and has no relationship with Afghan Taliban except for sharing the name ...

having above classification which is a slight explanation of good and bad taliban ... I would add a further note that all organizations has to work under some morale and human principle (if there is no law of land like Afghanistan) ... So even if Afghan Taliban is killing an innocent Afghan then he is criminal and must be punished but if same Taliban is fighting US then he is not criminal as he was the government and is fighting against the occupier ...

@The Accountant, Taliban was a group funded by ISI and trained by them. It defeated the forces of the Mujahideen that had fought the Soviets. You can see how much support they had as even reports from during the 1990s talk about Pak Army involvement and in particular weapons and logistics. To say it was legitimate is also a lie as Talib killed, massacred huge number of people for either not being Pashtu or because they were Tajik or Uzbek. Don't forget they plunged Afghanistan in the dark ages as well.

It is true that they brought peace but only through murder and genocide. Unless you don't consider Hazara and Tajik as human beings. Also Talib savagely destroyed Khorasan's historical sites and tried to destroy all pre Islamist things. In short they were acting just like thugs from ISIS.

Mullahs of Iran would be considered modernist compared to the Talibs.

The Pashtuns of Afghanistan have been marginalized and targeted as well

.
Unfortunately Afghanistan is tribal and no sense of unity. Each government does the bidding of their tribe. Mainly all leaders of modern Afghanistan have been Pashtu but then you get subtree and clans. It's a mess. I agree with you. Breaks my heart to see such people. Getting screwed so bad since 1970s. They need peace but not Talebans for sure.

This is entrie misstatement of facts by twisting them ...

1) Taliban was not a group trained and funded by ISI infact all of the Mujahidien group fighting against Soviet Union were trained and funded by ISI with backup support of US ...

2) All the persons fighting against Soviet were not Mujahid, some were fighting for land, some were fighting for religion, some were fighting for honour and some were fighting for money.

3) After Soviet withdrawal US straight forward went to exit mode leaving Afghanistan in mess and blood where all the fighting forces were united aginst Soviet but in absence of a common enemy was fighting with each other for more control.

4) ISI and Pakistani forces one of the biggest stakeholders after Afghan nation wanted to clear this mess and out of all group they identified Taliban as the best due to the following reasons:

a) Taliban were not fighting for land and were fighting for religion (a particular sect but still it was not for power).
b) Taliban leadership was already popular among masses because of its justful enforcement of Islamic law.
c) Very few people knows Mullah Omer was an ordinary teacher of Madarsa and has very few students (Thats why called Taliban as Taliban means students) his followers and he never claimed leadership till people requested him. The event which earn popularity to Mullah Omer was there was a dispute among some Afghans and the case prought to him by the people due to his reputation as pious guy and he decided the case at that very moment whih was acceptable to both parties. Then people of the area appointed him Qazi and his students were given the authoirty of implementation. HIs justice earn him favour and his influence grew.

5) Taliban were not the murderer of killer. It was a civil war and all the powerful groups were fighting each other. Murder is something when you kill someone old blooded but in a fight when your opponent also wants to kill you then its not a murder.

6) Taliban did not brought Afghanistan to Dark ages. Afghanistan was in civil war since several decades and Taliban were the one who ended that civil war. So after end of Civil war Taliban try to create diplomatic ties with all the nations for development of Afghanistan but west denied to accept Taliban and help them in developing Afghanistan... You can still find interviews of Taliban on CNN urging the world leaders to support Taliban for development.

7) If destroying buddhist relics and scripture is destruction then first of such act was done by our beloved prophet Hazrat Muhammad PBUH in Kaaba ... So be careful what are you saying ...

8) Kindly check names of Cabinet members of Taliban they were from coalition parties and from all the ethinicities living in Afghanistan other than northern alliance ...

8) I agree that Mullahs of Iran are modernist as compared to Taliban but who the hell are we to stop Taliban to live under a religious oriented leader ??? If people of Afghanistan were happy. Crime rate was reduced to minimum in centuries. Afghan was more united then in decades... After several decades civil war ended then who the hell me and you are to tell Afghan Taliabn we don't accept as you are very strict in implementation of Islam.

9) Your last statement clearly shows that you hate Taliban's due to their religious association and difference of sect ... Even I don't follow such strict principle of Islam but I salute to Afghan Taliban that they showed it is still possible to have a country which is interest free, which is as per Islam ...
