US Army offers its engineering expertise to India

Washington: The US Army Corps of Engineers has offered India its expertise in fields ranging from water resource management to research and development, environmental issues and construction of facilities for soldiers and civilians.

"I think it's a wonderfully advanced country in many respects, and their engineers are some of the brightest, I think, in the world," Lt Gen Thomas Bostick, Commanding General and Chief of Engineers for the US Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday.

"So I think where we can best help is where India feels it has a need," he said briefing foreign media on the corps' operations in the Asia Pacific region.

"For India it's really their decision or any other country to advise on what they can provide."

Bostick, who has travelled to India though not in his official capacity and "studied with a lot of engineers from India" listed among his corps' strengths "great water resource management expertise," research and development, work on environmental issues besides construction.

"So any one of those areas," he said. "I think that the first step is probably to continue to have the dialogue with countries to see where needs may not be met and if those needs can be met by an organisation like the Corps of Engineers."

Currently, the Corps is managing the construction of a bed-down facility for the Indian Air Force Station Hindon, in Ghaziabad for the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft as also assisting India with the procurement of infrastructure for them.

The construction of the facilities began in 2012, and Bostick expected to have them completed by the year 2016.

India has contracted to buy ten C-17s. Five of them have already been delivered and five more are expected to be delivered this year.

"However, our capabilities extend beyond construction management and foreign military sales," he said.

"We execute different missions - military construction, host nation-funded construction, foreign military sales, humanitarian assistance, and disaster preparedness and response projects in 22 countries in the Asia Pacific region," including India

Bostick said he planned to visit India, but a general officer interacts regularly with the countries in the Asia-Pacific region "and has a good relationship with the leaders that he would normally interact with in India."

Damn this is huge. This kind of assistance has no parallel in the world. Let's see the trolls argue against this.

It is remarkable that US commanders are empowered to make such proposals. In India, foreign ministry will not allow such statements.

I am also impressed by the way US armed forces support their Industries. For example training for the weapons purchased, construction of above mentioned facility and many more. I hope we learn some good things from them

Nothing remarkable in that, what makes u think that he is not advised by the US counsel in India? Everything is for reason.

What makes you think he made that statement at the advice of the US Counsel?
Every where its the standard procedure, besides
1. With Modi at the PM office and his likeness towards China all this is expected from juniors.( Senior American Diplomats are embarrassed at the moment to talk since they included him in a list where till now only he his the only member) Irony at best, but they are smart.

There are no free meals in this age ....

If you see a free 'piece' of cheese especially if it's rather tempting and attractive I always think of trap nearby ....

US seems to be in overdrive to get 'even' with Modi ...after their 'odd ' treatment to him over last decade ..

Your Anti American sentiment on this forum is incredible. You are very narrow minded. Russia does not give your a free meal. Yet, somehow you forget the numerour times the US helped us out when we were in need.

Modi's treatment was due to the laws and lobbying in the US. Congress had enough pull to demand such actionbe taken. Time for introspection. Time to put Sonia and Rahul under the scanner.
