US approves $1.9bn munitions sale to Israel - 5/19/2015 - Flight Global

The US State Department has approved a massive arms sale to Israel for a variety of munitions including the joint direct attack munition, laser-guided paveway, small diameter bomb, hellfire missile and advanced medium-range air-to-air missile in potential deal worth an estimated $1.9 billion to domestic arms suppliers.

The sale is foreshadowed in a notice to Congress published today by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

“The government of Israel has requested a possible sale of 14,500 joint direct attack munition tail kits consisting of 10,000 for the Mk-84, 500 for Mk-83, and 4,000 for Mk-82,” the notice says. “[Also] 3,500 Mk-82 bombs, 4,500 Mk-83 bombs, 50 BLU-113 bombs, 4,100 small diameter bombs, 1,500 Mk-83 paveway kits, 700 BLU-109 paveway kits, 3,000 hellfire missiles, 250 AIM-120C AMRAAMs, and 500 detector laser illuminated target kits for JDAMs.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defence capability,” the notice adds.

The sale, if finalized, would be a windfall for US arms supplier, principally Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Ellwood Group and Raytheon.

The US gives Israel $3 billion a year in military aid (that's the official released number anyway), so is it technically being paid for by the US taxpayer?

That's dependent on whether or not the US has sold any other military gear to Israel this year that has been accounted as "aid" - of course aid doesn't included sales alone. It also included training, logistics support and other auxiliary items.

Perhaps we can track down other sales to better answer the question? I can't seem to find much, I suppose that's the point though. Keeping sensitive arms sales on the "down-low" is best in a region that takes little to ignite.

And before you ask, no, I'm not a US tax payer (Federal, I pay state taxes when I shop) and thus don't have an opinion relevant to my nationality. I do have an opinion though.

I'm not a US taxpayer either, so it's not really relevant to me too, I was just curious. :P

I was just curious. :P

I am too, but one of my flags is that of the US so I just wanted to clarify. I'm only in the US temporarily, I don't live here.

In this article (the one below) 3.7 Billion in aid has been allocated for Israel - instead of the usual 3.1 Billion. One such spending amount is:

"an extra $619 million for Israel’s missile defense system program," So that'll need to be subtracted from the total found in the OP of this thread.

This also needs to be subtracted from the OP's total:

"also includes $268 million for two other Israeli missile defense programs: Arrow, and David’s Sling"

Already, 1 billion of the total 3.7 Billion aid package has been used on missile-defense, this prior to the sale in the OP. If other sales exist, perhaps the sale in the OP is a transaction and not aid?
