"With the introduction of the Mirage 2000-5 in the late 1990s, it was considered that the Qatari interceptor force was well equipped and capable of defending key points. However, it emerged in 2003 that Qatar was negotiating to sell its Mirage 2000-5s to India. India confirmed in March 2005 that it had decided in principle to buy these aircraft, before apparently abandoning the idea in mid-2005 on grounds of cost; subsequently, in the fourth quarter of 2006, Indian interest in the Mirages appeared to revive, but there is no evidence of any deal having yet been concluded. The most recent attempt to dispose of the Mirages involved an offer of 10 aircraft made to Indonesia in the closing stages of 2008, only to be turned down by March 2009"

Sad really ... these are very capable birds. But I guess the cost of operating them i.e. spares & munitions maybe quite high.

But the question arises that why would an air force first evaluate a fighter and then buy it ... only to decide to sell it off a few years later? Somebody didn't do his homework or kickbacks?

Man i don't how many aircraft they want? But it was better if they had gone for F-16s/MiG-29M/M2 /SU-30 MKK3. They will be cheaper to operate and they can give the same amount of capability like the Mirage-2000s gives but they are cheaper to operate.
Another new from Taiwan was that after the 3 Mirage-2000 crashes they have called the Dassault engineers to investigate the incident but in the same time they have sorted out that the operating cost of Mirage-2000s are much more than buying these aircraft so they just abondened flying these aircraft and thinking for selling it to its buyers as aircraft as well as spares. And they are looking towards induction of more F-16s from U.S Block-52 ones:usflag::sniper::bunny::yahoo:

Offer was not fake...we were very much interested in buying these. But they thought we were desperate so, they asked $65 mil. for each aircraft.

However i agree with your latter part ..it was their greed thet has led them to this situation..

well i hope they go to Muslim country who cannot afford them indonesia is one who is low on the fighter jets they can get these in half prize it means if they go to france they get one and if they go to qatar or uae they get 2 of the price of one these jets easy to maintain and equally good as F 16

IAF is very happy with the performance of the Mirages in its current inventory.

If costs can be negotiated to acceptable levels, India should go for these planes without any further thinking.

Well Indian can afford it, because it has bigger fleet, plus money and in better negotiating position. This plane is maintenance nightmare for small countries, for sure its been offered to Pakistan to by Qatari govt but must be refused long time ago. These plane were already flown by Pak pilots , they know something and reason of rejection, which is not expose to media.

i think pakistan ploy was to deny these 10 odd a/c to india by making a bid. 10 odd a/c dosnt make economic sense anyway. u need atleast 2 sqdns worth to make it a effective platform.

No country will buy only these 10 aircrafts. These will be considered only if India (or, any country ) also buys UAE mirages.

^^^i don't think so india will buy these bocz india is already upgrade their Mirage 2000-5 by $43 mn per aircraft and india never like to introduce Arabian old aircraft with our modern aircraft....
BTW congrats for ur 2000 post..

Contrary to what you think, some of these air crafts were inducted as late as '95 imo..And considering how Arabs take care of their planes ,they are worth a shot if they quote reasonable price.

thanks for the compliment..hope to cross 2500 next month;)

sir who did said you that UAE mirages are old they are as new as yours to be frank even better in avionics than your mirages they hardly fly that much as iaf flies

Its deal for India, these airframe are almost new, not much flown. Plus they all been upgraded and very well stored.
Fatman you are right, little as 10 makes no difference, until someone else wants to get rid of same number of planes.
