Union Cabinet gives minority status to Jain community

New Delhi:
A day after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to grant minority status to Jain community, the Union Cabinet on Monday approved a plan for the notification of Jains as a minority community at the national level.

Rahul Gandhi had on Sunday spoken to PM after a delegation of Jain leaders led by Union Minister Pradeep Jain met him yesterday to seek his support for the same.

Earlier, AICC had said in a release that Jain Samaj leaders had spoken to Rahul about their long-pending demand for minority status for the community and urged him to support their cause. "Rahul recognised the role played by the Jain community in the social, cultural and economic development of the country. He assured the delegation that he would do his utmost to ensure fair and equitable recognition and representation for the Jain community," the release said.

Currently, Jains enjoy minority status in some states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Once recognised as a minority, Jains would get a share in central funds earmarked for welfare programmes and scholarships for the minorities.

At present, five religious groups - Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis - are notified as minorities.

Indian National Congress added 11 new photos to the albumEmpower women and make India a superpower: Rahul Gandhi.
Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today interacted with women representatives in Bhopal as part of the manifesto consultation process for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Rahul Gandhi said the next step would be to provide women reservation in the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha. He reiterated that the Congress party is committed to passing the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. “Our next step towards women's empowerment is the Women's Reservation Bill. We will not let it go,” Rahul Gandhi said.

During the interaction Rahul Gandhi said, “Unless women are empowered, India cannot become a superpower...we don't want to be a superpower in which 50 per cent of the population is treated unjustly.

1.) There are only 5 million jains in India even if 80% of them are adults and have votes and even 50% of them goes out to vote 2 millions votes scattered all over India is nothing in the view of the accusations of the vote bank politics.

2.) Jains are one of the most prosperous people in India they are business class now they will open school, college etc. and calls for high fee, donation or do whatever they like but govt. can't interfere because as per our constitution govt. can't interfere in the matters of the minority community.

.
look at the irony in our neighboring countries there are groups who are dying to be accepted as a part of majority religious community while here many groups want to get rid of that status.
