Union Budget 2015 -16 : Defense Expectations

Say even if it is going to be 40 billion $ ...imagine half of it will go to MMRCA deal ....!

and even if half of it is supposed to stay within India itself ...it is whole lot of money from what is allocated to defense in total ...

with the shortfall in revenue gathered in the form of taxes and RBI pushing GOI for fiscal consolidation ...it is unlikely that we will have any substantial rise in defence budget ...I will not be surprised if it is pegged around 40-42 billion $ ...

No buddy... the amount for Rafale would be paid little by little till the last aircraft is given to IAF, so we'll be paying 20B in more than 5-7 years or more

We didn't got a major increase when the same minister had Finance and Defence Ministry under control, what makes you think he now will freely spend that much? GDP is growing, but the government has to push several reforms on economy and infrastructure now and at the same time has to keep the dept under control, which is the main limiting factor.

2011 -12 => $34 billion
2012 -13 => $38.5 billion
2013 -14 => $37.4 billion
2014 -15 => $37.3 billion
2015 -16 => $??? billion

Correction

Modi is pro India

His party, though, is pro something else, if he can keep other fringe elements and loud mouths under check then we're off to scale new heights

Implementation of OROP
Artillery acquisition of various types
Arjun mkII more orders
Nag missile induction
More funds for DRDO
More funds for border road building and maintenance
Funds for next submarine line p75i
Funds for Bangladesh border fence
Better training and equipment for paramilitary

Modi is pro defence.

Well, the first defence budget of the new government and the rather low result in actual procured arms or techs and most of all, the delaying of tenders for economic agendas actually shows something different. Let's see if the new budget and the new year will change that.

I believe India's defence budget is about 10% of India's total outlay which is on the higher side from an economist perspective. So if we want our defence budget to be more then there should be an increase in revenues. Govt. revenues are not very high as compared to our GDP. I would like an increase in DRDO / ISRO budgets and increase in education, health and sanitation budgets. However, our defence preparedness should not be affected due to lac of funds.
