UN commends Emirates ID
UN says Emirates ID one of the world’s best in biometric population enrolment

The UN has singled out the Emirates Identity Authority in its e-Government Survey 2014 for its world-class biometric enrolment of the entire population. The United Nations’ report, which recently came out, includes a special box item in which it describes the Emirates ID’s biometric enrolment programme as “one of the world’s best biometric programmes”.

In page 86 of the latest report from the UN titled ‘e-Government Survey 2014: e-Government for the Future We Want’ and published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) the world body summarised the achievements of Emirates ID as follows:

“The deployment of the Emirates ID Authority’s Biometric Enrolment by the Emirates ID Authority as part of the National ID Registration Programme is recognised as one of the world’s best biometric programmes.

“Emirates ID Authority collects fingerprints of all the citizens and legal residents above the age of 15 in the country. It is mandatory for everyone residing in the country to be registered in the National Population Register. Considering the unique demographic composition of the country where expatriates amount to nearly 90 per cent of the population, the biometric enrolment is part of the mandatory health certification for all expatriates, making it convenient for the residents.

“The current database boasts of over a 105 million prints of rolled fingerprints, plan and hand side prints, in addition to over 15 million facial images. The best two fingerprints are stored in a secure, encrypted container in the Smart Card that is issued as the National ID Card. The Smart Card is provided with a Match-On-Card Applet which allows for a biometric verification and authentication enabling assertion of an individual’s identity on demand. The security on the ID Card is ensured by the encrypted containers which is enabled only through the National Validation Gateway. All the biometrics, data transmission and protocols are as per ANSI and/or ISO Standards.”

Ali Mohammad Al Khoury, Director General of the Emirates Identity Authority, said, “It was a great joy and pride that the UN recognised the Emirates ID’s achievements. It is a tribute to the noble vision of the UAE’s leadership. I hope this will inspire other countries in the region and elsewhere to embark on innovative identity management initiatives whose advantages straddle diverse spheres, including financial and capital markets, national security and good governance.“

Emirates ID Card Now Integrated into Windows Operating Systems

Access to government services made easier and quicker alongside fortified digital security, Emirates ID says

The credentials of individuals provided by the Emirates ID Card are now reliably embedded within the windows operating system, facilitating easier and quicker access to hundreds of government services in the UAE for both the UAE nationals and residents. The Emirates ID card is the only national ID card system embedded in the Windows Operating System, and is recognized by Windows 7,8, 8.1 and later drivers, in addition to Windows-supported tablets.

Considered a true game changer in trust management in the UAE, the integration of the Emirates ID Card in Windows Operating Systems will be immensely beneficial for the customers of government services by making their access to the services and the authentication of their individual identities much easier and less time-consuming. Additionally, the users will also be able to generate government-validated digital signatures in all their Microsoft Office and PDF documents.

“This is also a big help for the developers of Windows apps as the facility to ascertain individual identities using the ID card instead of the much vulnerable logon system will provide added security and reliability for the app developers. The UAE ID Card mini driver has been subjected by Microsoft to all the stringent testing and certifications and listed on the Windows Update Services. Once a customer inserts his ID card in a card reader connected to a Windows Operating System, the drivers for the card are automatically downloaded from Windows Update Services and ready for use for obtaining a large number of government services, including those offered by the Emirates Identity Authority,” explained Ayesha Al Rayesi, Executive Director, Central Operations, Emirates ID.

The true power of the UAE ID Card in delivering service can then be seen in the device stage experience as a plug and play Windows device. “The import of the integration of Emirates ID card into the Windows system goes far beyond the facilitation of services and generation of digital signatures. It is perhaps the first instance in the world of a national ID program being integrated into one of the most popular computer operating system, offering multi-pronged solutions to the entire population on the one hand, and making the management of apps fully tamper-proof on the other. In a digital environment marked by susceptibility to manipulations and identity fraud, it works not only as a facilitator of services, but also as an impregnable wall of security for service providers and app developers,” she pointed out.

Cyril Voisin, Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Gulf, said the UAE government was leading the way by empowering citizens and residents to leverage their government-verified identity securely stored in their Emirates ID smartcard on Windows tablets and PCs. “This achievement is the result of a long-term collaboration between Microsoft and Emirates Identity Authority. As a strategic partner to governments, Microsoft is committed to support innovation and people-centric smart government initiatives,” he added.

What is being done with NADRA cards? We started earlier than them.

Had it not been Musharaf we would have still been struggling to travel on hand written or typed passports and handwritten or typed national ID cards.
