UAE throws weight behind Musharraf​

Pakistan government under pressure to ‘welcome’ former president

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan is said to be under unprecedented pressure from the rulers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to pave the way for a safe, secure and honourable homecoming for former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

They are also said to have asked Islamabad to initiate steps to build a favourable political image of the former military dictator and ensure that upon his return home, he will not be harassed by court cases and the police.

According to an understanding reached between the UAE and Pakistan several months ago, it was decided that the Pakistani government would facilitate Musharraf’s return as soon as the two-year bar on his participation in politics ends, sources said. Official sources claimed that the pressure had already forced President Asif Ali Zardari to curtail his visits to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

This extraordinary interest of UAE rulers in Pakistan’s internal affairs, especially in Musharraf’s political future, was thrown into light once again due to UAE’s foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed al Nahyan’s covert visit to Islamabad within three days of the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) announcement that Musharraf has been included in the investigation of former premier Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. He spent a mere 30 minutes with President Zardari before heading back home but, immediately after his visit, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the media that the government did not intend to question Musharraf. Rehman, on November 27, categorically said that the government had not taken any decision to include Musharraf in the probe.

Earlier, a joint investigation team of the FIA had prepared a 32-point questionnaire which was meant to be sent to the former military ruler. FIA Director-General Waseem Ahmed said that the agency wanted to record the statement of everyone who had any connection with the case.

When asked why General Musharraf was being involved in the case after the team had completed its report and submitted it to an anti-terrorism court, Ahmed said the case would remain open until all supplementary information was obtained.

Hmmm .... Musharraf's return looking more and more imminent.

Whether he succeeds politically or not will however depend on how many established politicians he can woo to his party, given the parliamentary system we have.

These are our internal politics and I am surprised to see the level of foreign involvement as well as commitment..from UAE to Saudi Arabia and UK to USA..is colonialism really dead in sub-continent or we are the new entity?? These arabis fail to back us for anything positive or useful while demanding a full share in our internal politics. Day isn't far when they would be demanding voting rights for their citizens to choose Pakistani president.

Every Foreign Govt. wants their man in Pakistan. Saudis want NS, where as UAE and US/Israel want Musharaff. But nobody will ever give a hoot for what people of Pakistan want! Such is the tragedy of this country.

The arabis only care for their investment and business as well holding their influence in Pakistan to keep their ties and trade secured with India. Should be provided with presidential level security as a former President and COAS.

He was targeted several times by extremists while in office, so that is likely not something new for him. His security level will determine whether he'll survive or not. If he gets into office, he'll be back to where he was in terms of the threats to him and his chances of survival.

He technically lost his 'dictatorial powers' when he resigned as COAS. Without the control of the Army, he can only be as 'dictatorial' as the rest of our 'political leadership', if he gets into office.

I never used the Term "powers" rather i used a very delicate yet provoking term "Skills" - if you can tell the difference

not by electorate..if not tampered with...
His actions(or inaction) has created a very strong lobby against him amongst the more sentimental section of the populous.
there is no more love for him in the Army..and there real chances that the enlisted ranks may create a huge issue if he is supported.
The privileged class and businessmen will support him..since his tenure bought them profit.
But a massive support.. is unlikely..and if he is forcibly planted..there is a chance of upsurge in instability.

If the news is true UAE is very much over estimating Musharaf he will not be able to achieve what Imran Khan has achieved in Pakistani Politics. He will become a trophy target for extremists a lot of cases will be opened against him in the courts so the situation is not good for him to come. Having said that I doubt the authenticity of this report.
