UAE-Pakistani Friendship Road in Pakistan’s tribal region opens
Tribal Areas (Pakistan): The UAE-Pakistani Friendship Road, funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development at a cost of $60.6 million (Dh222 million), has been inaugurated in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Pakistan.

The move follows the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and follow up by Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, to provide humanitarian and development aid to Pakistan.

The UAE-Pakistani Friendship Road, with a length of 72 km and width of nine metres, is one of the biggest development projects in the tribal region, and links south and north of Waziristan regions. During the inauguration ceremony, the audience thanked the UAE President for his kind gesture. General Sharif extended his thanks to Shaikh Khalifa for continuous support, citing the UAE-Pakistani Friendship Road, deemed one of the development projects in Pakistan. He delivered the message of gratitude on the behalf of inhabitants of the tribal areas to the UAE leadership.

For his part, Al Ghafli stressed that the bilateral relations between the UAE and Pakistan have a unique and special character demonstrated through the fraternal spirit, appreciation, mutual respect and shared vision between the leaders and peoples of the two countries.

He pointed out that the opening of “this vital road is nothing but the product of a long history of love, togetherness and cohesion between the leaders and peoples of the two friendly countries.”

Al Ghafli said that the directives of the political leadership of the UAE have leveraged the success of the project and translated it into a reality. He appreciated the kind gestures of the UAE President and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, which focussed on helping the poor and needy in Pakistan.

He also praised the support and continuous follow-up enjoyed by the PAP by Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs. He stressed that the support and follow-up by Sheikh Mansour was a catalyst for the successful implementation of 416 development projects in Pakistan.

Al Ghafli referred to the success of partnership, cooperation and coordination with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which has been keen to contribute to several development projects in the areas of roads, bridges, health, education being implemented by the UAE Project to Assist Pakistan.

A number of beneficiaries said they were appreciative about the UAE leadership’s stance to offer all forms of assistance in time of their need. While welcoming the opening of the road which would facilitate transport in the tribal region, the beneficiaries noted that the naming of the project, the UAE-Pakistani Friendship Road, “reflects intimacy in the relationship between the peoples of the UAE and Pakistan.”

I would say Pakistani bussinessmen should invest in UAE business rather than only purchasing properties. You just can not simply cut down indian skilled workers with UAE market filled with Indian business and their products. We do not have a single reputed Pakistani hospital or Hypermart but we see Aster, NMC, GMC, Prime Medical, LuLu, Malabar, Khazana, and thousands other Indian brands. We need to compete with indians to even sustain our current number which is falling every day.

Indian labor sucks big time...we have more than 2500 personal workings from various nationalities in our contracting company. Pakistanis and Egyptians tend to have the best retention ratio plus efficiency. They are also the most expensive to hire as compared to other nationalities such as Indians and Filipinos...

The problems presented by Indian labor are not related to professionalism and efficiency but rather host of social issues with racketeering, politics and manipulation being the most. Which leads to fights at labor camps...

Im a Pakistani and lived my hole life in UAE. Im sorry to say wether people agree with me or not our reputation in work force is not good mainly we are aggressive bad manner and lie and no unity were else indian they are mostly united

by the way already in UAE a huge number of Pakistani workers exist i.e 1.2 million on the other hand the total nationals of UAE are just 1.08 Million people and its very true pakistani investors normally invest in property which is not good recent days i have observed markets are filled up with Indian garments and this is a recent development which i observed in last few months. since pakistan has a good garments industry they should come forward with Made in Pakistan logo and put some investment in the market. Pakistani population in UAE is very patriotic they have purchasing power and therefore our investors can make enough of money out of this market

Pakistani mangoes arrive in the UAE
First shipments were sold out within two days of arrival.

Pakistani mangoes have hit the UAE markets with the first shipment arriving in Dubai from Karachi on Thursday.

Sindhri and Almas have thus made their way back to Dubai. Sindhri, as evident from its name, is grown in Sindh, is often considered one of the best varieties of mangoes in the world because of its sweetness, golden colour and size.

Importers of Pakistani mangoes, based in Dubai's Al Aweer Fruit Market, said the first shipments were sold out within two days of arrival.

Mohammad Afzal, managing director of Bukhamas Trading Company, who has been importing mangoes from Pakistan to Dubai and Muscat for the last 38 years, said there is a bumper mango crop in Pakistan this year.

"We may be able to increase our exports to the UAE and other GCC countries this year," Afzal said, claiming that his company is one of the major importers of mango stocks from Pakistan in the region.

He said the UAE, especially Dubai, is one of the biggest markets for Pakistani mangoes and his company supplies the fruit to other Gulf countries from its base in Dubai.

With the advent of summer, Indian mangoes Kaser, Rajaputri, Dasheri, Badami and premier brand Alphonso have already captured the fruit shelves of major supermarkets in the UAE.

After Sindhri, Dasheri, Anwar Ratol, Chaunsa and Kala Chaunsa dominate the UAE's fruits shelves until September.

During the three-month mango season Dubai-based traders import 2.5 million crates through more than 130 ship trips. A crate of Pakistani mangoes weighing eight-10kg comes for Dh25-30 in the wholesale market.

UAE-based traders imported Pakistani mangoes worth $6 million with an approximate share of 32 per cent in the total Pakistani mango exports in 2014.

In 2015, export of Pakistani mangoes to the UAE and other Gulf countries dropped significantly when the Pakistan government banned the use of wood packaging including crates, boxes and cases for storing fruits and vegetables.

Pakistan's Ministry of National Food Security and Research, said the decision was taken amid considering phytosanitary measures since wood can encourage the growth of pests.

Exporters claimed that the sudden ban on wood packaging was the cause of almost 50 per cent decline in mango exports to the UAE and the GCC countries last year. They said since the orders for wooden crates had already been placed, it was impossible for them to repack mangoes in corrugated cartons without raising the prices and delivering the fruit on time. This year the traders are ready with the corrugated cardboard boxes.

Both Indian and Pakistani mangoes dominate the UAE market with almost a 70 per cent share, while products from Kenya, Sudan and Australia serve the rest of the market.

Chaunsas may not make it

It might be a little disappointing for mango fans that Pakistan's premier brand Chaunsa and its other varieties - Safaid Chaunsa and Kala Chaunsa - might not reach the UAE markets this year.

The season of Sindhri will last approximately 45 days, followed by Chaunsa and Fajari until September.

But since the government of Pakistan banned wooden boxes, mangoes are being exported in corrugated cardboard boxes and shipped in refrigerated containers.

According to Dubai-based traders mangoes need extremely hot weather to be fully ripe. And they should be kept in the open air.

"Open top containers and wooden boxes are ideal for shorter distance exports. It takes 48 hours to reach Dubai from Karachi's Ghas Bandar port. By the time shipment arrives in Dubai, the mangoes become fully ripe," they said.

"I doubt, this season, we will be able to import Kala Chaunsa and Safaid Chaunsa because it has the shortest shelf life. Two days in an airconditioned container and corrugated boxes may spoil it. We might import lesser quantity of Chaunsa also," Mohammad Afzal, managing director of Bukhamas Trading Company, said.

Many Pakistani supermarkets, which import mangoes through air are likely to offer Chaunsa, but definitely the prices will be comparatively higher.
