ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has stopped purchasing Petroleum Naphtha from Pakistan after a $80 billion deal with India, Trade Minister Khurram Dastagir has confirmed.

UAE and India have recently spread their tie-up in the energy sector as well as the petroleum sector.

“It has resulted in decline of exports and increase in trade deficit. However, we are exporting several other items to UAE,” the minister told the Pakistani media on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, petroleum group and coal had a share of 1.8 per cent in exports in July, with a total of three billion rupees.

Last year, Pakistan exported 3490 metric ton petroleum crude worth 320 million while 9425 MT Excel Top Naphtha was exported for Rs920m and 9900 MT Petroleum Top Naphtha for Rs970m.

During the first month of this fiscal, Petroleum Crude of more than Rs2 billion was exported to UAE but only 7117 MT Excel Top Naphtha worth Rs580m could be exported due to 36 per cent decline in exports.

The export of Top Naphtha has reduced to absolutely zero.

I was just about to write that.

Pakistanis, like other nations, should understand that there are no permanent friends, they are your friends as long as it suit their interests. That's why Pakistanis should realize that if they don't build and advance their nation (and they have great potential in that), no one will help you in that matter either.

Perhaps, refusing to join stupid Yemen war was one of the most important foreign policy decisions Pakistan has ever made in past decade, because for first time imo, it served Pakistan's best interests, while being in contrast to interests of so called 'friends' of Pakistan.

I think alot of Pakistanis have understood this now

We have sacraficed whilst apart from words not had anything worth while in return, the UAE arabs have been particularly useless


I think this has also been understood in our military and political echelons

Going forward I think Pakistan will only look out for its own security and interests and only stick its neck out when something concrete is on the table


Countries need to understand the hostility we have towards india, any country that fails to take our security issues into account cannot expect us to reciprocate and look out for theirs

This should go for the UAE, iran and anyone else

After CPEC and Gawadar, UAE is the direct competitor so dont expect and favors from UAE. Take this as a good news now Pakistan can control the movement of UAE officials in Pakistan reducing the terror financiers. In fact the killing of Lashkar Jhangvi goons maybe have caused this action.

This news doesn't pass the smell test. If we buy the numbers, Pakistan exported a total of ~19,000 tons of naphtha (both types) last year. But this is barely anything - the entire annual exports of Pakistan wouldn't even fill up a small size tanker.

A single Indian oil refinery (say at Jamnagar, Mumbai, Mangalore or Chennai) can produce way more naphtha than this in a month. Just for comparison, I think India exported close to 80 million tons - 80,000,000 of petroleum products (diesel, petrol, naphtha etc) during the last financial year.

Its obvious that Pakistan is a minor player in the petroleum business - UAE choosing to buy a fraction of a cargo from Pakistan seems to be more a commercial decision - to which some really fertile minds in media are giving an Indo-Pak twist.

First of all they don't have Nawaz Sharif secondly they won't set such expectation. For a reason they are known as baniya.
