UAE and Qatar Officially Join the US War in Afghanistan

(MEMO) — Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are to join the longest conflict in US history, by supporting the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan.

Abu Dhabi and Doha will be part of a multi-nation fight codenamed “Operation Resolute Support”, according to the Washington Post. Both Gulf countries will focus on training and advising Afghan forces. Official numbers on how many troops will be deployed has not been disclosed but the military inclusion is set to be approved next week during NATO’s ministerial meeting in Brussels.

Both Qatar and the UAE are rivals in the Gulf region, where Doha remains to endure an air, land and sea blockade over allegations of supporting terrorism and extremism. To add, President Donald Trump backed the allegations against Qatar last year. But Qatar continues to categorically deny the claims, and has since turned the tables by proving to the US that it is committed to combating terrorism. Trump has since repeatedly urged Gulf states to end the rift.

Qatar has been vying to become a full-member of NATO to boost its security outlook but was rejected on the basis that only European countries could qualify, according to the Washington Treaty. Whether this was a major set back for which Doha is looking to prove worthiness in Afghanistan is unclear.

The conflict in Afghanistan began in 2001, it saw the US lead 40 other countries to fight Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and associated forces who they said were responsible for the armed attack on the World Trade Centre in New York. Qatar’s cargo planes previously provided resupply missions to nations fighting in Afghanistan.

Qatar played a “major role” in the Afghan conflict by opening a Taliban office in Doha, in a bid to broker a peace deal with the US. Despite the Taliban praising Qatar last year on their efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan, relations may soar with Qatar’s deployment in Afghanistan.

Leaked emails from Emirati Ambassador to the US Yousef Al-Otaibi showed that the UAE was vying to open an office for the Taliban in its territories, however the group which governed Afghanistan setup a base in Qatar instead. UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed was “angry” following the announcement.

. . . . . . .
amazing. after the devastation in Yemen, they want to continue on this new adventure?

They need to work towards a complete transition to stable Afghanistan. These proxies have devastated the region.
There was no intent to stabilize afghanistan ... Nato is here to spread chaos

did they lost tiny brains ?
Did they have brain ?

.
Afghanistan (failed state since forever) has no importance to UAE or Qatar or any other Arab state for that matter. Zero.

What I believe is meant with this news (if it is even genuine) is a support role similar to what the UAE did after 2001.

Nothing more than that.

Which honestly with "Ummah glasses" was a commendable thing to do. However futile in the wider picture unless the Afghans themselves wake up and smell the coffee.

They enjoined great respect by locals and were almost never under fire.

Pakistan needs to take strong action against any Arab adventures into Afghanistan.

Which are those adventures in irrelevant (for Arab states) Afghanistan? Last time I saw (historically) Arab states and Pakistan have been on the exact same side in Afghanistan unless you know something nobody else knows. It's a failed entity. Better leave it completely. Neighbors can't but Arab states surely can. Arab states should never have involved themselves in Afghanistan (US-Soviet cold war) as it only destroyed 1-2 decades of the society in KSA and gave rise to moronic radical clerics of which vast majority have been dealt with by now, luckily. Still certain aftereffects are felt. Hopeless choice.

Not sure what UAE and Qatar are thinking but I expect them to send, what, 100 soldiers or something, lol. Irrelevant news if genuine.

are these two best friend going to fight each other in afghanistan as free realm?

A troll that honestly believes that the average Emirati and Qatari is at each others throats.

Ajamis and their stupidity in regards to internal Arab affairs.

Welcome to graveyard of empires ;)

UAE fresh from dividing South Yemen away from Yemen, and supporting militarily breakaway Somaliland from Somalia.

Running Guantanamo and Abu graib style torture centers all over the Arab world.

They don’t have any good reason to be in Afghanistan. I hope Imran Khan takes strong actions against them.

They don’t even understand that, i.e. their beatings in Syria and Yemen.

Now they want a new American Jihad in Afghanistan.

As if Arabs of all people are afraid of wars.

The UAE already had a presence in Afghanistan and were the most respected foreign soldiers by locals and were almost never under attack.

You worry about this ugly dwarf warlord of yours whose people are being dealt with by Taliban and who most Afghans hate to put it mildly.

The only community in Afghanistan that Arabs should care about is the ancient Arab minority (from the conquest of Afghanistan) that lives in mainly Eastern and Northern Afghanistan and which mostly have been absorbed into local populations (Tajiks mostly).

Arabs don’t even understand that, i.e. their beatings in Syria and Yemen.

Now they want a new American Jihad in Afghanistan.

Never knew that controlling 90% of Yemen was losing or that Yemen and Syria became non-Arab states. Interesting.

What "American Jihad"? Last time I saw Pakistan was the biggest facilitator of this project against the USSR in Afghanistan. You control all those armed proxies in Afghanistan. For Arabs Afghanistan is an irrelevant entity.

KSA was foolishly pressed to join this useless proxy war that had nothing to do with KSA or Arabs by the West (as was Pakistan most likely) and that was a catastrophic decision. 1000's upon 1000's of Saudi Arabians and other Arabs went to Afghanistan and got poisoned by a failed and anti-Islam ideology that has given us nothing but harm. None of their sacrifices mattered at the end of the day either. Afghans did not repeat their sacrifices either other than by joining ISIS in Iraq and Syria and killing civilians there.

UAE and Qatar won't send more than 100 soldiers each who will help train the Afghan national army and try to support stability in this perpetually failed entity.

Control your Arab-obsession despite being heavily influenced on all fronts by the same Arabs. Pakistan and Arab states are not enemies. Those Arab states that you are obsessing about have done more for Pakistan and Pakistani economy than any other entity other than your expats. Have a bit of self-respect despite your dislike for certain Arab regimes that you use as an excuse to hide your Arab-obsession. I read your likes like an open book. Don't play those games with me.
