U.S. to send Humvees and unarmed drones to Ukraine — but still no weapons - The Washington Post

The United States will expand its military aid package to Ukraine to include Humvees and small aerial drones, but it is still declining to send weapons long requested by Ukrainian officials as their military tangles with separatists who have Russian backing and arms.

Vice President Biden informed Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko of the news in a phone call on Wednesday. The new aid package includes about 30 armored Humvees, 200 other Humvees, radios and hand-launched Raven surveillance drones, which are also used by U.S. troops. The news was first reported by the Associated Press.

A senior Obama administration official said that while the White House continues to believe there is no military resolution in Ukraine, the country has the right to defend itself. The new aid package includes $75 million in “non-lethal defensive security assistance,” and the new Humvees. Also included are secure communications equipment and radars that detect mortar fire.

“This new assistance is part of our ongoing efforts to help sustain Ukraine’s defense and internal security operations and resist further aggression,” the administration official said.

The Raven drones to be sent look like this:

White House officials said in a statement that Biden and Poroshenko spoke about “the situation in the east, additional non-lethal U.S. security assistance to Ukraine, and new sanctions on Russian-backed separatists and their supporters.” Biden added that he remains concerned about ongoing violations of a cease-fire by the separatists near Donetsk and Mariupol, areas that have at times seen fierce fighting.

Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate last week that he is open to sending U.S. weapons to Ukraine, joining a growing number of senior American officials who say Kiev may need lethal aid from the United States. President Obama has so far resisted that idea, even as new Russian tanks and artillery cross the border into Ukraine.

14.03.2015 | 23:23

"The troopers may start applauding," the president said.

A plane with 30 Humvees on board is arriving in Ukraine next week.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced this in Kyiv on Saturday when meeting with civil volunteers who work for Ukraine's Defense Ministry.

"The first batch of 30 armored Hummers will be delivered to us by plane next week. The troopers may start applauding," the president said.

However, he said, Ukraine will continue manufacturing own armored vehicles, including armored personnel carriers of Series 3 and Series 4.

We should send our M60E3 patton tank to ukraine, we have 800 of those sitting in Amy depot...

I dont know why they keep it in depot, even the National guard were using the Abrams now, we should, maybe send 200 of those and sell another 200 to Ukraine, we still have 400 left for drone target

Then we should get rid of our F16 too

If the US sends heavy weapons to Ukraine, then Russia will send Kornets to NAF. Two can play at this game. 8-)

NAF currently has Konkurs, not Kornets. Kornets are enought to destroy any tank in the world. 152 mm tandem HEAT. No armor can stop it.

US position on sending lethal weapons to Ukraine depends on Minsk accords fulfillment - Nuland
21.03.2015

Washington has not made the decision on the supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine, and the U.S. Department of State links the further development of the situation to the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland has said, speaking at the Brussels forum.

"We are monitoring what is happening onsite. We are working on the best result - the full implementation of the Minsk agreements, but if this does not happen, this will change our position," the U.S. official said.

West should consider all tools, including arms, for Ukraine: NATO general - The Economic Times
By Reuters | 22 Mar, 2015, 04.10PM IST

BRUSSELS: The West should consider using all its tools to help Ukraine, including sending defensive weapons, NATO's top military commander said on Sunday.

Asked whether he was in favour of sending defensive weapons to Ukraine, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove told a Brussels conference: "What we see (is) diplomatic tools being used, informational tools being used, military tools being used, economic tools being used against Ukraine."

"And so we, I think, in the West should consider all of our tools in reply. Could it be destabilising? The answer is yes. Also, inaction could be destabilising," he said.
