U.S. does not recognize Russia's treaty with rebel Georgia region: State Dept| Reuters
WASHINGTON Wed Mar 18, 2015 1:42pm EDT

(Reuters) - The United States does not recognize legitimacy of the treaty signed on Wednesday between Russia and Georgia's rebellious South Ossetia region, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said.

"The occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are integral parts of Georgia, and we continue to support Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

(Reuters) - Russia's new treaty with Georgia's breakaway South Ossetia region breaks international law and hampers efforts to strengthen regional security, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.

Stoltenberg said the agreement "violates Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and blatantly contradicts the principles of international law, OSCE principles and Russia's international commitments.

"This so-called treaty is yet another move by the Russian Federation that hampers ongoing efforts by the international community to strengthen security and stability in the region," Stoltenberg said in a statement, adding that NATO did not recognize the treaty.

Ossetians will never be ruled by Georgians. This is why South Ossetia is independent from Georgia.

Lithuania's MFA says treaty between Russia and South Ossetia has no legal value - EN.DELFI

"In the view of announced signature of so-called "treaty" High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated that it "clearly violates Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles of international law and the international commitments taken by the Russian Federation, including the 12 August 2008 Agreement and its Implementing Measures of 8 September 2008 and has no legal standing". The high representative stressed that "the signature of this document on the very day of the 31st round of Geneva International Discussions creates circumstances that do not foster a constructive climate for efforts to improve the security and humanitarian situation on the ground," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

"In this context Lithuania reiterates its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. Like the previous agreements between Russia and Georgian regions of Abkhasia and South Ossetia, this "treaty" has no legal force. It severely harms international efforts for peaceful resolution of the conflict and has a negative impact on the security situation in the whole region. Geneva International Discussions remain the sole format for ensuring security and stability and reaching for peaceful resolution of the conflict," the statement of the MFA read.

Georgia is having partnership agreements with NATO and being the largest member of NATO , United States is talking on behalf of many small countries. Russian Federation is still the largest Nuclear weapons state.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 7. /TASS/. Over 1,000 motor rifle troops from the Russian military base in Abkhazia have completed their large-scale field exercise that has lasted for one month, spokesman for Russia’s Southern Military District Vadim Astafyev said on Monday.

The field exercise was held at the Tsabal and Nagvalou practice ranges on the mountainous, forested and coastal terrain.

"As the final stage, the personnel held a control firing exercise using organic weapons and military hardware, including the armament of modern BTR-82AM armored personnel carriers, RPG-7 hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers, Pecheneg machineguns and AK-74 assault rifles," the spokesman said.

The troops practiced accuracy fire on the targets simulating a notional enemy’s lightly armored hardware and infantry at a distance of up to 1,000 meters. Half of the firing exercises were held at night using night vision devices mounted on military hardware and weapons.

The motor rifle troops practiced compliance with the standards of march, tactical, engineering and firing training.

Overall, the drills involved up to 200 pieces of military hardware, including BTR-82AM APCs, Kamaz Mustang armored trucks and communications vehicles based on the BTR-80 APCs.
