(CNN)The Trump administration is expected to designate Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism as soon as Thursday and bring charges against the country's president, Nicolás Maduro, according to five sources familiar with the situation, in a momentous move that will mark a modern low point in relations between the US and the ailing socialist state.

The designation puts Venezuela in the company of only four other countries -- North Korea, Iran, Sudan and Syria -- that have "repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism," and will enable the US government to implement further crippling sanctions on the Maduro regime.

Prosecutors from the US Department of Justice are also expected to unseal criminal charges against Maduro and senior leaders from his government, the sources said. It's unclear what specific crimes they are being accused of, but the sources said they were related to the country's extensive drug trafficking efforts.

Attorney General William Barr is expected to announce the designation and charges at a news conference Thursday morning. A spokeswoman for the Justice Department declined to comment, and CNN has reached out to the State Department, who officially makes the terrorism designation.

.
Just because Venezuela sent some heating oil as aid to America doesn't make it a state sponsor of terrorism. America is the biggest terrorist on Earth, as everyone knows, but that still doesn't make humanitarian aid to ungrateful and undeserving Americans sponsorship of terrorism.

USA needs to have a compliant t government in Venezuela fast to make use of their oil... Time right now is against them and with China.

Is it time for USA to follow Rome in its footsteps and become an empire, or will the Republic remain?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Thursday announced rewards for information leading to the arrest or conviction of various Venezuelan nationals, including President Nicolas Maduro who Washington aims to push out of power.

“The Department is offering a reward of up to $15 million for information related to Nicolas Maduro Moros,” the State Department said in a statement. The move came as the U.S. Justice Department announced charges against Maduro and others on narco-terrorism.

Information like what. Suppose I give the information that he can be had at the Venezuelan Presidential Palace. Will I get the reward?

Can't imagine that US politicians still have time to do this..

I was wondering the same. With the ratcheting up of sanctions even more against a severely Coronavirus affected Iran to the patently illegal designation against Venezuela's duly elected--at least by Latin American standards--leader. If Maduro is not elected then where is the CIA backed Guido?!!

I guess 'hit them hard while they are down' mentality! Only in Trump's impetuous, cruel, insufferable mind!

Looks the US is trying to pull another Noriega type situation like they did in the 80s Maduro is lucky to have China,Russia and Iran as an ally but the question remains how loyal the intelligence and military would be with Maduro long term the people are 50/50 but the US is mainly banking on the Venezuelan diaspora in Miami or Florida for this
