U.S. 7th Fleet Would Support ASEAN South China Sea Patrols

But who did say the US to protect Indonesian waters?
So, base in Indonesian island is too far for stopping China.

We r discussing why US want an air base in Indo's island, bro. In my opinion, thats base is for watching Indo more than watching CN./ US can have bases in PH-Malay to watch CN.

I do not think Natuna island is too far, maybe it is only because your vision is too near...

We are more than capable to patrol SCS.

Indeed we just helping out. After all, China has sent ships to deal with Somalian pirates. So in return you should be thankful to have American ships in these waters more often.

"The head of U.S. naval forces in the Western Pacific said the U.S. would support an emerging plan to create multi-national patrols in the South China Sea that could bear similarities to anti-piracy patrols in the Strait of Malacca.

During a meeting this week with naval leaders from Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) U.S. 7th Fleet commander Vice Adm. Robert Thomas said the U.S. would back a combined ASEAN maritime patrol in the hotly contested region."

it's not a permanent base for their Air Force and Naval fleet, but more akin to Joint Forward Operation Base, for refueling and replenish the logistic for their joint patrol fleets. In case of urgency need the base (in Ranai not only Air Forces Base there is Naval Base there too) can be used as emergency Joint Operation Base. The personnel will be Indonesian, all of them, including the protection and basic security and logistick manning personnel, meanwhile the infrastructure development for much larger facility will be assisted by them to uphold with their standards. That's what they propose to us.

As an Island, Natuna Besar is twice more larger than Singapore, so there is enough supply of freshwater and large enough to basing large number of troops along with their logistics. And their strategical position can be used to monitoring the most critical points in South Chinese Sea before the entrance into Malacca Strait and Java Sea (in which the Java Sea hold two entrance into Lombok Strait and Sunda Strait)
