Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday thanked Muslim clerics for shifting the timing of 'namaz' prayers in order to avoid any clash with Holi revellers.
"I want to thank the Muslim clerics for changing the time of 'Jumma Namaz' for Holi. Jummah (Friday noon prayer) comes 52 times in a year and Holi comes once. They (clerics) decided to reschedule the namaz after Holi. The festival went off peacefully," he said while addressing public meetings ahead of the Gorakhpur bypoll.

"People were apprehensive as Holi and Jummah were on the same day, but Hindu brothers celebrated Holi peacefully. Riots had taken place in earlier years when people used to come out of mosques after offering prayers and Hindus used to play Holi, but this time round everything went off peacefully," the chief minister said.

Correct me If I'm wrong but holi can be celebrated anywhere and friday prayers are suppose to be in a Masjid only. I don't see how there can be a conflict??

In a show of communal harmony, a noted Muslim cleric in Lucknow has shifted the timing of the Friday namaz prayers by an hour in order to avoid any clash with Holi revellers and also appealed others to do the same.

Imam-e-Eidgah Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahli, who is also executive committee member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), appealed to the imams of different mosques, especially those in sensitive areas, to shift the timing of the Friday prayers by 30 minutes to an hour and, in the process, send a message of communal amity.

"...we have shifted the prayer timings by an hour at the Idgah here. It will now be held at 1.45 pm," Farangi Mahli said today.

"In the past, there have been incidents of riots breaking out with the Holi revellers throwing colour on those going to offer namaz...we have taken this step especially keeping in mind the senstivity in the mixed population areas," he said.

The cleric said that Shia scholar Maulana Kalbe Jawwad has also decided to shift the prayer timings at the Asifi mosque where it will be held this time at 1 pm instead of 12.20 pm.

He said this decision will send a positive message of the country abroad and remove the impression that an atmosphere of communal tension prevailed in India.

Farangi Mahli said that Lord Jagganath Yatra this year was delayed by two hours and the route was also changed when it coincided with Bakrid.

"During the Ramazan too, we had made an appeal to three families who had their weddings scheduled at the Ram Lila ground opposite the Idgah to postpone fireworks, DJ and music programme while the "tarabi" was performed between 7.30 PM to 10.30 PM and they obliged willingly," he pointed out.

In Pakistan they are free to do anything but normally people don't because 97.5% percent are Muslims and unlike great India till date we never dictate their food menu and they can eat whatever they want to eat. They should announce not praying on friday at all this holi. One hour is too long a period to change the timing because it affects the Asar prayer timing.

In 1981, the military dictator Zia-ul-Haq introduced Ehtiram-e-Ramadan(Respect for Ramadan), an Islamic law that prescribes punishments of up to three months in jail and a fine for people who drink or eat publicly. "A person who, according to the tenets of Islam, is under an obligation to fast shall not eat, drink or smoke in a public place during fasting hours in the month of Ramadan," the law says.

LAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs on Wednesday unanimously approved the Ehtram-e-Ramazan (Amendment) Bill, 2017 under which fine for the hotel owners – violating the Ehtram-e-Ramazan Ordinance, 1981 – has been increased from Rs500 to Rs25,000.

People who will smoke or eat openly during Ramazan will be fined Rs500 along with 3-month imprisonment. TV channels or cinema houses that violate the law will be fined Rs500,000 or more.

The amendment bill was introduced by Senator Tanveer Khan in the Senate sitting held on January 16 and was referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs for further consideration.














During the meeting, Tanveer requested the committee to take strict action against people who violate the law during Ramazan. Earlier the committee members suggested closing down cinema houses for three hours early in the morning and later for three hours after Iftar during Ramazan.

Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony Pir Amin Ul Hasnat Shah suggested that all the cinema houses across the country should remain closed throughout the holy month.

Issues related to Ruet-e-Hilal committee

Discussing the issues pertaining to Ruet-e-Hilal committee, the committee’s chairman Senator Hafiz Hamdullah urged the ministry to resolve the issue of moon sighting across the country. The ministry’s officials told the senator that they had discussed the issue with all the relevant provincial departments.

Government plans top Ruet-e-Hilal body meeting in Peshawar

It was suggested that the term of Ruet-e-Hilal committee should be made four years at federal, provincial and district levels. The committee should have two representatives each from all provinces and one representative each from federal capital, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

It was also suggested that directors general of Met Office and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) as well as a representative from the ministry be also made part of the moon-sighting panel.

Pir Amin Ul Hasnat Shah informed the committee that the federal government had not allocated any dedicated budget for the Ruet-e-Hilal committee due to which its chairman along with its members were working without salary and perks since the committee was constituted in 1974.

He said several times the Ministry of Religious Affairs had raised this issue at various levels and forums but so far no one had paid any heed to it.

Letter to ministry: Stop Met predictions on moon sighting: Mufti Muneeb

“They believe that the role of the committee is not much as it only functions three to four times throughout the year. They forget that this committee has a major role to play as it announces most important religious events for the entire nation,” he said.

Shah said even when the chairman and committee members travel to other city on an official visit they only get air ticket and stay at a 2-star hotel. “They do not get any TA/DA. Meanwhile, they also do not have money to load credit in their cell phones to do office work,” he added.

He said 26 members of the committee are performing their duties under chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman, who has been performing his duties for the past 15 years.

The minister said currently there was no criterion for appointing/selecting a member for the committee. “Right now whoever applies for the membership becomes a member,” he said.

Shah suggested reducing the number of the committee members from 26 to 9. “The less the number of members, the easier it will be for the federal government to allocate budget for their salaries,” he said.
