Two-nation theory has bred practice of hatred

Look at posters location and source,i can expect this :agree:

Of course. Anything about the contents of his views?

He is more knowledgeable than most people here. A true scholar who knows history and is a voracious writer having written many acclaimed books.

He is more than his "location and source"!

Instead of looking at posters location, why don't you do the service of refuting his points if they are wrong. He is a well respected senior journalist of 35 years experience.

M J Akbar is indeed one of the most influential secular muslim scholars in the world (as opposed to Islamic theological scholars).

His views are quite influential. Its good to hear from him, taking the lead in forming the opinion of not only muslims, but Indians in general.

These terror strikes might just be the spark that sets of a new era of truly progressive politics in India, based on performance rather than identity. It reminds me of the hindu-reform era of the late 1800s.

If that happens it will be a silver lining.

We have had false starts earlier, so I am a bit skeptical.

There is no such thing as a secular Muslim scholar!

He's just another lackey o the Hindus. Probably he's being threatened by his other Hindu bros. He's just looking out for himself by writing what Hindus love
to read. Just hear the buzzing on this thread.

You indians need to control your hatred, we didnt do anything wrong...almost all of us hav been living in our land forever so we decided what we want for our land, and theres still few sikhs and hindus left in pakistan its not like we forced anyone out of their homes. pakistan was majority muslim region for over a thousand years...different from hindustan...deal with it already. we didnt come from a different continent like israelis have.

All the uneducated people believe that two nation theory was actually originated by Sir M.A Jinnah, but this is because they never know the history.

It was actually the Sarvakar who talked about two-nation theory many years before muslims league adopted the idea. Sarvakar asked all muslims to leave indian to make way for Hindu Rashtra. When Jinnah introduced his two-nation theory, Savarkar announced, I have no quarrel with Mr. Jinnah’s two-nation theory… It is a historical fact that Hindus and Muslims are two nations.

“His (Savarkar’s) doctrine was Hindutva, the doctrine of Hindu racial supremacy, and his dream was of rebuilding a great Hindu empire from the sources of the Indus to those of the Brahmaputra. He hated Muslims. There was no place for them in the Hindu society he envisioned.” (Freedom at Midnight, by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins).

So the hate campaign against Muslims was well in place even before the partition of erstwhile British India. This and many other significant factors forced Jinnah to demand a separate nation for Muslims as he believed that Muslims would not be safe in India — a prophetic declaration indeed! Jinnah had no haterd against India but circumstances were different, it were the hindus.

However, he had not harbored grudges against India or its leaders. He had kept his house on Malabar Hill, thinking he could weekend there, while running his country from Karachi on weekdays, but destiny had something else in store for the estranged neighbors of the Asia Partition.

The seeds of partition were actually sown by the stalwarts of Hindu Mahasabha, primarily the quartet of Savarkar, Gawarikar, Apte, and Nathuram Godse. Independent India’s history is testimony to the fact that in a conflict between the forces of secular nationalism and religious communalism, the latter has always ruled the roost. Secular forces have more often than not ended up playing into the hands of communal forces. Such has been the history of independent India, and it is again on display in Jammu. Syed Alvi Teheran Times

So the roots of hatred are themselves started by fanatics hindus who wanted a hindutva nation.

A good read from one of the best Muslim writers in the subcontinent.
What I have gleaned from many of MJ Akbar's pieces is that he is decidedly anti-pakistan. Being Muslim does not give his views any more credibility than were it Bal Thakeray writing the piece.

I do find it interesting, and this hypocrisy can be seen on both sides, that Indians would like to point out that Indian Muslims are primarily Indians first (as it should be), yet the implication in some of the posts by Indians here is that somehow an Indian Muslim commentator bashing Pakistan has 'more credibility'.

If most Muslims (or even just 'many Muslims') in India are Indians first, then MJ Akbar's opinions are nothing more than a continuation of the Pakistan bashing garbage churned out by the likes of Chidanand Rajghatta of ToI.

.
muslims in India have to prove that they are Indians, while hindus in Pakistan never have to prove anything.

-just my two cents
