Al-Shabab ambush kills several policemen in Kenya's Garissa county - The Hindu
May 26, 2015 12:35 IST

Several Kenyan police officers were killed in an attack on Monday night by suspected Somali militants in the northeastern Garissa county, where 148 students were massacred last month, local media reported.

A police spokesman, George Kimoti, confirmed there was an attack in the Garissa region but declined to give more details.

“Please give us time to consolidate all the information,” he said.

The Daily Nation newspaper of Kenya reported that at least 20 police officers were feared dead, the victims of an ambush Monday night by al-Shabab militants in Yumbis village.

The police officers who were on their way to rescue another team of officers wounded in an attack earlier on Monday were moving in a convoy of four vehicles, according to the newspaper. The vehicles reportedly were burned.

The Islamic extremist group al-Shabab has carried out several attacks in Kenya in retaliation for Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia, where Kenyan troops are part of an African Union force bolstering the Western-backed central government.

Despite major setbacks in 2014, al-Shabab continues to wage a deadly insurgency against Somalia’s government and remains a threat in the East African region.

The group claimed responsibility for a deadly assault last month on a college in Garissa town.

@Hindustani78, Al-Shabaab killed over 20 police officers in that incident. Kenyans should be using their military to defend the border, and not the police; and it seems their intelligence can't predict nor intercept Al-Shabaab's hit and run attacks.

Somalia is having this civil war since decades and there use to be many warlords earlier but now its like all those warlords have been perished by the Al-Shabaab or they have joined ranks with Al Shabaab.

Turkey have done lot of work in Somalia which in reality kept the peace for quite some time but now again the Al Shabaab are in headlines.

The warlords were defeated by the Islamic Courts Union - which was a popular uprising. Al-Shabaab 1.0 was a subset of that upraising; they were a bit more organized. Once the warlords were driven out, US - backed Ethiopian invasion was unleashed on Southern Somalia. Al-Shabaab and other factions fought hard. They were initially successful.

Al-Shabaab 2.0 have later on became opposing every government that was established. They seem to be fighting every form of government that takes hold in Somalia.

The Turks did provide a lot of help. There are other African Union forces in the country backed by the West as well. However, Al-Shabaab is still wrecking havoc in the South. It is exerting every effort to prevent any government from taking hold in Mogadishu.

For anyone who didn't know, North Kenya and Ogaden aka East Ethiopia used to be part of Somalia before it was annexed by foreign Powers, they're mostly ethnic Somalis. :police:

I never understood why they focus on Kenya, it gives no strategic importance for AlShabab. AlShabab knows the Somalian politicians were installed and run by Ethiopia aka minority Tigray elites. Somalia will never fall as long Ethiopia is active politicially and military in Somalia. They're the main key in Somalia.

2006 proves it. The Islamic Union took over Southern Somalia, the Capital and were about to spread the North after a long civil war until Meles Zenawi sabotaged their plan and turned them (AlShabab) rogue afterward.

Yet, the terrorist organization focus on a country that doesn't benefit them at all beside Kenyan military inside Somalia.

Hassan, can you imagine what will happen if they infiltrate Ethiopia or if an uprising purged there? It will inflict the whole region in the East. :fie:

Ethiopia and Somalia do have border disputes and they have fought 3 wars including the Ogaden war.

Eritrea got spread from Ethiopia and if i remember correctly , UN Sanctions were placed on Eritrea for supplying of weapons to Al Shabaab and other Somalia warlords. I think still UN sanctions are being placed on Eritrea but i am not so sure.

Islamic Courts Union was considered moderate as they agreed for the ceasefire but Al Shabaab group was not agreed on the ceasefire.

Yes. Ethiopian security services have a huge hand in Al-Shabaab, that is why they no longer go after the Ethiopian troops nor regions whose leaders are pro-Ethiopian. They are death squads who are making life difficult for Somalis.

Nairobi: A bomb blast at a guesthouse in northeast Kenya killed at least 12 people on Tuesday, in an attack claimed by Shabaab militants which last hit the area earlier this month.
"We have found 12 bodies so far after we managed to access the building," a senior police officer told AFP.

"We are still combing the area with the help of anti-terrorism police and sniffer dogs in the ongoing search and rescue."

Eleven men and one woman were killed in the 3:30 am (0030 GMT) blast at the Bisharo lodge, a police source told AFP. The toll was confirmed in a government statement that said part of the building was collapsed by the blast.

The Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab militant group claimed the attack in a message broadcast by its Radio Andalus media organisation, claiming 15 were killed.

"This attack is part of a series of attacks in which the Mujahideen are hunting down infidels" in northeast Kenya, the group said.

It is the second Shabaab strike in Mandera in three weeks. The previous one on October 6 killed six people at a gated residential building that mainly housed non-ethnic Somalis and non-Muslims, less than a kilometre from the volatile Somalia border town of Beled Hawa.

Mandera governor Ali Roba said the raids were designed to divide communities and destroy the economy.

"This is an attack that is aimed at making sure we don`t attract investors, we do not attract a professional workforce, we do not have interaction with the rest of the country," Roba told a press conference on Tuesday morning.

Northeastern regional security boss Mohamoud Saleh said he suspected "local criminal gangs" of complicity since border security had been stepped up after the October 6 attack.

Another security source who did not want to be named told AFP local politics might also be involved, with some seeking to trigger a declaration of a state of emergency that would prevent elections taking place as scheduled next year.

"There is serious political tension in the county," the source said.

The Shabaab has fought to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu since 2007, but turned its sights on Kenya when the army was sent into Somalia in 2011 to fight the Islamic insurgents.
