Turned them into cannon fodder. Saddam was thinking if he survives the war, the worst outcome would be losing power. Arab mentality,

I went to Kuwait for 2 years to teach the Kuwait airforce how to fix and maintain their Apache helicopters. Only a quarter of the airmen would show up each day, and a handful of that quarter would try to learn. There is no punishment for those that didn't show up to the hanger, they still got their pay and benefits. The other issue is they believe they are Allah's chosen people and are superior to all other Arabs. Because of this they didn't feel the need to train or learn. The 6 of us teaching would do almost all the repairs and maintenance.

US does not need Turkey against Russia. During the cold war US needed Turkey against USSR and Warsaw Pact. Now there are many more NATO states and Turkey is not as important, but US would yet want Turkey in NATO. Keep your friend close and enemy closer, kind of deal.

It seems as though their armies are primarily there to keep their own people and potential political rivals subservient, to maintain their own personal grip on power, not so much in defeating other armies.

Arabs are full of . UAE has been involved in the worst kind of wars all over the Middle East and Africa. The last country to invade a GCC country was another Arab country. The way he talks we would think Iran is genociding, torturing, raping Arabs, and stealing their land, not Israel.

The first westerner I have seen ask the second question, though it was only in the first few decades not centuries. Because they weren't led by Arabs in general, but by the tribe called Quraish who were descendants of Prophet Ibrahim (as) (they became widely dispersed). The closer they were to Prophet Muhammad (s) in faith, the brilliant they were. Many Western historians rank Khalid Ibn Walid among the top three or top five military generals of all time. The Prophet had called him the Sword of God.
