Twenty-one hospitalized after clashes in Hambantota for Chinese Industrial Zone in Sri Lanka

At least 21 persons including 3 police officers were injured and hospitalized as a result of the clashes which broke out during the protest in Hambantota today (7).
Director of the Hambantota Hospital Dr Sumith Manatunga said that a majority of the individuals admitted to the hospital had sustained injuries from pelted stones.
Sri Lankan police used water cannons to try to break up violent clashes Saturday between government supporters and villagers marching against what they say is a plan to take over private land for an industrial zone in which China will have a major stake.
The clashes took place as Prime Minister Ranil Wickeremesinghe was attending the opening ceremony for the industrial zone near the port city of Hambantota.
According to reports, individuals armed with clubs first attacked protesters organized by the opposition and led by Buddhist monks in Amabalantota, while the protesters responded by throwing rocks -

Shameless are the people who first mocked the development of Hambantota project and then glorifying it now for their political ideals.

Most of these protestors are not even from H'tota. They are members of an organization called "Nil Balakaya" created by Rajapaksa's thug son and most of the so called worker strikers that vandalized the port also coincidentally happens to be members of the organization.(its also a coincidence that the said son was also present with the "protesters)"
The rest are people fooled by these peoples lies as most of the people in the region happens to be rather uneducated.

Some are spreading a lie that the 15,000 acres of SEZs are an expansion of the tiny SEZ near the H'tota port which is a really big lie. H'tota lacks the population and infrastructure to sustain such a SEZ. Its extremely under developed.
Out of the 15,000 acres only 1235 acres would be situated in Hambantota and the rest would be placed in much more developed neighbouring Districts and majority of the land that will be leased is State owned.
Only a small amount (Currently estimated to be 5%) will be initially acquired from Civilians and full compensation will be paid(Lands in H'tota aren't that expensive and most of the houses are tiny as well)

The plan to establish a investment zone was there since rajapaksa days but Rajapaksas were smart enough to get the maximum benefit to SL while the current government does not. They simply handed over the driving seat to the chinese while we should be able to drive the whole project in a manner it serves our interests.

From what i understand these 15000 acres are not only situated in Hambantota but some of it the Matara district and the largest proportion in the East or Uva.. So what are the genuine grievances these people have ? When the Hambantota port was being build thousands of agricultural land was taken over as well.. Nobody protested.. Where are the people protesting in Matara or the East ? Are the Rajapksa's not bothered about their livelyhood.. Nothing but third class politics as i mentioned before

These behavior and engaging in illegal protests doesn't solve anything it only makes RW and MS more popular. The riot was organized by Namal ,Gammanpila and another clown that was running shirtless during the riot(Whose pictures are featured in various memes). This is as idiotic as MR running to Geneva shouting about war crimes to get rid of then UNP government. It only humiliated SL in front of the world and made the govt stronger in addition to the economic damage. The best option would have been to direct public opnion against them without violating the law and sending police officers to the hospital. And this is the second time they messed up, the first time is sponsoring the Vandalism of the Port and Borderline Piracy. They had SOO MANY oppurtunities to attack the UNP but they had to do it the old fashioned way and ruin it

This isn't the 750 acre project that was only for the port. This is a bigger chain of SEZs across the nearby districts and the one in H'tota is very small and probably the smallest of the SEZs. The issue is the SEZ in H'tota was really unsuccesful and it will take a lot of time to make useful enough to make the H'tota port viable.
H'tota lacks the population ,skilled labour ,infrastructure ,housing etc etc. Waiting for these things would take decades.
The Stadium ,Airport ,Convention center don't contribute either. So they have decided to go allow the Chinese invest in the new LNG project ,the old "regaining Sri Lanka" era Refinary and a cement plant in the H'tota SEZ.
It would be quicker to set up several SEZs and lease them to a good Chinese company to handle them, the more developed districts around H'tota can handle things better and could develop industries faster.

But of course Ranil and gang made some mess ups recently like allowing Senok to go ahead with the Assembly Plant. They should have cancelled it after VW was unable to invest and now Senok gets a 5 year(as I remember) tax break for the plant which was originally given in hope of attracting FDI from VW. they should given up their pride and now we lose tax revenue and import duties when we need them the most

But these clowns had NO shame in Brutally Assaulting Law Enforcement officers , Pelting stones at the Chinese and there are more slaves that has no shame in saying these are right.

When Mahinda was planing and building the port and the industrial zone, he was mocked for the project. Current ruling class mocked the project by saying there are big rocks in the harbor so ships won't come, the project is a white elephant and so on. But now, the same idiots are saying it is worthwhile project while selling it to Chinese wholesale. What is this double standard. You should first give you opinion on that rather than spilling verbal vomit here.

Chinese have had these problems everywhere in the world (especially Africa). This is primarily because they are focussed only on the money they're giving and expect it to buy everything everywhere. Even in CPEC they're bringing in their labor, their equipment inside Pak land and keeping ordinary Pakistanis out. They think it's their road, their land their port because they spent money building them. I'm not surprised at the turn of events.

India was offered Hambentota before the chinese. India rejected the offer (because money would be used in the war against Tamils and make it politically problematic) so the chinese got it. If you're thinking this is some 'masterstroke Lanka China development' because Pakistanis present it so you're making a mistake. This was always about money and development. Chinese do money quite well but flop on development (look at similar projects in Africa). So if there are protests questioning development/ effect that's pretty much in line with what the chinese have been accused of everywhere in the world. These issues are probably valid.
