Turkish Politician Says He Wants to 'Shoot Down One More Russian Plane'

Following the win of a Russian CSKA basketball team over Turkish Fenerbahce in a May 15 Euroleague title game, Turkish politician Samil Tayyar wrote in his twitter account that he feels like downing another Russian jet.

CSKA Moscow beat Fenerbahce 101-96 in overtime on Sunday, thuswise winning its seventh crown in the biggest game in European basketball. Appearingly upset with the outcome, Turkish parliamentary deputy Samil Tayyar posted a controversial statement on his Twitter account after the game.

"I want to shoot down one more Russian jet!" the politician wrote.

On November 24, 2015, a Turkish F-16 fighter shot down a Russian Su-24 combat jet over Syria, which fell 2.5 miles from the Turkish border. The jet was carrying out anti-terrorist operations in Syria. The crew of the plane ejected and one of the pilots, Oleg Peshkov, was killed by ground fire, while the second pilot survived. He was later rescued.

The plane was shot down by Turkey as it had allegedly violated Turkish airspace. Both Russian and Syrian military officials confirmed that the plane never crossed into Turkish airspace. In response to the incident, Russia introduced a set of measures against Turkey, which ban or restrict the activities of Turkish organizations in Russia, prohibit hiring Turkish citizens by Russian employers, and ban certain food imports.

I feel it is mostly through these kind of liberal-turned nationalist-islamists that the governing party has been able to push through its extreme religiosity agenda. Now I am reading news about the changes (in the interpretation) of the term "secularism" in the constitution.

That would probably be the death blow to the secular republic as established by Ataturk even if the ruling party could not entirely remove it from the constitution.

I believe, founding principles should be maintained and protected, because, as a country born out of a revolution, the very dynamics of Turkey lie in its founding principles.

China has experienced similar historical processes, but kept the core socialist values.

For instance, the 1993 Amendment to the 1982 Chinese Constitution added a clause stating that ‘China is at the primary stage of socialism’ and committed the country to ‘building socialism with Chinese characteristics’.

And in 1999, another amendment added: "China will stay at primary stage of socialism for a long period of time."

As you can see, the meaning suggested that at a primary stage of socialism it was necessary and legitimate to adopt capitalist or non-socialist elements in the system.

But, critical aspects of socialist system, especially the land ownership, has been maintained.

In my opinion, secularism to Turkey is just what land ownership system is to China.
