Your statement is confusing. US protecting YPG. Turkey is attacking ISIS positions suddenly. .........NATO has set goal to set a little state or secured enclave inside Syria and in the backyard of Turkey. ISIS is now turn to become Paksitani TTP. Attacking Turkey now. It seems Turkey is just fight, but has no ultimate goal.
Turkey had to get active and attack isis sooner or later, because the region controlled by isis between the pyd/ypg (part of pkk) parts would soon be 'liberated' from isis by pyd/ypg and then added to the pyd/ypg with the support of the US. Even if Turkey stayed out of Syria mess from the start, this day was bound to happen. Basically this operation is aimed at eliminating isis and bring fsa to this region, just so pyd/ypg can't conquer there first. Turkey will not allow pyd/ypg (part of pkk) to grab more land and later pose a bigger threat to Turkey. We shall see, Turkey has warned the pyd/ypg to leave Menbic and return to the east of Euphrates. If it doesn't and decides to clash with us, then pyd/ypg will be struck too.
Turkey had choice before the war start. They should have come up with some security pact with Syria.

I am talking about facts just. Until spring 2013 Assad was losing ground rapidly in Syria. Then course of war has changed. Nothing else affected the war so much.
Even then pyd/ypg would pose a threat sooner or later. Now here's hoping the Turkish govt will also reach out to Assad (just like it did with Iran and Russia), find a solution between fsa and Assad, and focus on ypg/pyd.

Nodoubt , it is very critical situation for Turkey to create strategic depth inside Syria and hold back Kurds from Turkish secured zone. Where other Syrian neighbor Isreal in favor of Kurdish state, somewhere between Iraq and Syria and little be adjacent to Turkish border.
We lesser mortals do not know if this was Erdogan's plan all along: to help set Syria aflame, then charge in as the savior of the burnt, traumatized, and weakened survivors, thus establishing a kind of neo-Ottoman imperialism with himself as Sultan.
